Here's the story- son and I were given a hamster about 2 yrs ago. Lovely creature. Son showed a little interest, showed it to visitors, talked about it when peoples discussed pets. So about 3 mos ago it escaped. Mom frantically looks for it, sets "friendly" traps to try & capture it. I figure it left the cage to die. We decide it's not coming back, put cage away. Well son & xh decide that mom "needs" a hamster. They buy one for me. It has to be returned because it has bottom rot or something. Son & I return sick hamster & buy #3. For 2 months son looks at, sometimes feeds, sometimes even helps clean cage of #3. When son is away for a few days with dad, the hamster dies. (YES< I learned my lesson- no more hamsters) But son has been home for 3 days and never noticed hamster was gone. What's with that? He usually notices everything- rearranged furniture, new room freshener everything. He does lack any attatchment to people and objects (except ipod & computer).I think if I disappeared,he would honestly not miss me. He can get his own meals & shower. He just doesn't need people or animals. It can be very difficult to live with him

Yup, the feeling of not actually being needed can be horrible.
