a child diagnosed as something else and you know that the dx doesn't fit your child??

My oldest is 17 yrs old and when he was 13, we had him diagnosed with ADD and a learning disablilty. As he has aged, his obsessive nature, not being able to handle things outside his normal routine, his impulsivity, etc has gotten majorly worse!! It's driving me nuts. I have asked that the dr that diagnosed him recheck his papers to see if he may have missed that he may have asperger's. Now that Joey has been looked at and the oldest's cousin has autism, we are really wondering if he was mis-diagnosed. Is there anything I can do to get him re-checked? I am at my wit's end thinking about how he is going to handle college or university next year!! Argh!!

Can someone help my poor over-worked brain?? LOL

Mike was diagnosed SID and APD (auditory processing disorder) and rule/out PDD at 3, ADHD, OCD, tic disorder and anxiety disorder at 4-5, Aspergers at 7 and autism spectrum/high functioning autism something like that at 10.

Cait was diagnosed (gotta think back here) ADD, language disorder, dyspraxia at 3, then PDD-nos at 4 and Aspergers at 7. Somewhere in there she has had a few others added in as well but her autism stuff came at 4 but not until they dx'ed ADD first.

Hi there,

well, whatever your child is dx'ed, the real issue is how are his symptoms being managed and what interventions and accomodations does he need both to be successful and to learn to be successful? An ADD/LD dx should also be bringing school assistance, careful scrutiny of his strengths and weaknesses, his IEP should be being tweaked to help prepare him for college and life. Does he need OT for his sensory system, what is causing rigidity, etc. If he is asberger's, the bigger question is what would be done for him with that dx that isn't currently being done with the ones he has?

Also, a doctor will need to retest at age 17, there will be changes in his testing now that weren't there at age 13. Is this doctor a neuropsych or evaluator with a specialization in autistic spectrum disorders? Many doctors just don't know enough to dx asperger's or other spectrum disorders.

BTW, you may want to rethink attending college next year, if he needs more intervention and preparation in order to attend. Not all children should go straight from highschool into college. Just a thought...

Welcome to the boards. We are quite a large group of BTDT moms, many of whom do have older children (not me, my son is only 9 years old), so if you have more specific questions, we may be able to help.

yours,

Sara
