First of all, happy birthday to Bugsy! My son, Alex, also turns 6 this month (on the 24th). I read your recent posts with interest, as I see a lot of similarities to my own son. Alex tends to be very defiant and has major meltdowns VERY easily. I am interested in your "mom money" reward system, can you tell me exactly how you implemented it?

Okay, the update. Alex (as you may remember, is an aspie) has been doing "fairly" well in kindergarten. He's in a regular classroom with the assistance of a resource teacher for part of the morning. He does well academically, but socially and behaviorally has been a challenge. He is not completely potty trained (REFUSES to poop in a potty), but has managed to keep his pants dry if reminded to go on a regular basis (begrudgingly). While I think the kids in his class accept him, I'm afraid his SID tends to make him react in ways that others may think he's a bit strange.

His yearly IEP is scheduled for the day after Easter. While I think we're on the right track for services, I'm nervous about him being in first grade next year, as it's a full day. I don't see his potty training getting any better, and I know this is going to have a major impact on his social interactions with peers.

Okay, this is getting too lengthy, so I'll stop here. Just wanted to touch base!

Hey Laurie!

I am new here, and I have to say, it's a relief to see other people going through what I've been going through!!! My DS, who just turned 5, sounds just like yours, except he doesn't use the potty at all!!! And meltdowns........we have them on an hourly basis I think. Sometimes I think he argues with me just to argue with me!!

I don't have any suggestions or ideas, as he was just diagnosed, but my shoulder is here for you to cry on anytime!!!!

Hi Laurie,

nice to see you again. I was starting to wonder where you had gone.

Mike had problems with potty stuff in K. All though he would poop in the potty, he frequently wet himself in K. I was mortified, but his K teacher told me it was fairly common. That many kids who had that problem did respond more to peer pressure magically in 1st. I was sceptical, but sure enough he has made major improvements this year in 1st grade. Only 2 accidents all year. I hope it works out the same for you.

I was very apprehensive about 1st for a number of reasons, but with a good teacher it has turned out way better than I expected. Hopefully all goes well for Alex as well.

Good luck with your IEP and keep us updated.
