Hello everyone! Thanks for all the help this morning with the replies. After researching all day I finally came across a number for our Dept. of Disabilities and Special Needs. We gave them a call and they asked some of his symptoms. My husband was explaining them and they said from what we told them that it does sounds like asperger's or HFA. They gave us a number and his name for a referral to our DSN which is I guess our more local dept. of disabilities. He said to call them and tell them that he wants Noah evaluate. He did say that because our state doesnt actually recognize asperger's to not mention thats what we think it is and thats what we are getting evaluated. Tell them that we want him evaluated for HFA so they will pay for it. He said then if it comes back as asperger's they cant charge us because they had no idea. So now im waiting on a call back from them as we had to leave a message. It feels kinda good to possibly be getting things underway. We also asked him about leaving Noah in the public school. He suggested we leave him in for the remainder of his kindergarten year and than he said when and if he becomes diagnosed to meet with a local group with other kids with aspergers and get opinions. He said most people around in this area will tell us to home school until a later date such as when we feel hes mature enough in the social field to handle school. So that is a bit of an update and I wanna thank you guys all again for the help. Ill deffinately keep you updated!

Hi!
I wasn't around this morning to read you earlier post, but when I saw this and you said, Dept of Disabilities and Special Needs and DSN I knew you had to be in South Carolina! (then I cked your profile!)
I'm in SC. I have a son, Weston age 11 w/ autism, he's classified 'high-functioning' but I really hate that label! He's in 6th grade. He's fully mainstreamed at school, even takes honors classes in math and language arts. He receives speech therapy, and OT consultation. He has a resource specialist that is our 'go to' person. She's fabulous! however, he has to leave class often to regroup from the stress and sensory stimulation. At school he stims (self stimulates) often in pretty classic autistic ways which doesn't help w/ peers. He has difficulty communicating personal needs (but not factual information), he has very poor social skills. He tends to retreat to his own special world often.
I was told to expect a long wait for an autism professional to come out and do our evaluation, but it really only took a few months. We're in the Columbia area. We see the developmental peds at the Usc. Currently we have Rich/Lex ddsn for our service coordination, but we're thinking of changing to the South Carolina Autism Society http://www.scautism.org/. Currently our son gets all the needed therapy through the school district, but we can foresee the day when we'll need to bring in an individual therapist or psychologist and we feel that SCAS is better equipped to help us find an appropriate one.
HTH!
Thanks for the update.
