hi,
over the last few weeks school for my ds has been HELL.when he has got angry,ds has been saying that the teacher has locked him in the quiet room.i've been in to see the teacher and she has insisted that the door had not been locked.today i picked him up and he came running out, really upset, saying that he had been locked in there again for getting angry at dinner time.this time his teacher admitted she had done this,by the way the teacher in question is the special needs co and deputy head.only 2 weeks ago i told them that ds has a seperation ax and is clostrophobic along with pdd/nos,so putting him in a roomthat no bigger than 8x8 is not going to work, you will only make his anger worse.so you can imagine what i was like..
nan and grandad are going to have him tomorrow but i dont know what to do next.im in the uk and help here is next to zero.any suggestions please.

Wow! Since I'm not familiar with the way things are done in the UK, I can't be of much help...but I'll tell you what, if I were you, I'd press charges. In fact, in the US you could probably have the witch arrested for child neglect/endangerment.

I'd be beating on some doors right now, if not on the teachers face directly. "Quiet Room" my a**! And I suppose your son went in the room willingly? Or did the teacher have to forcefully place him in the room??? Locking a child in an 8X8 room is unforgiveable...and anybody with a lick of sense knows that kids Dx'd with PDD-NOS aren't going to respond to that type of barbaric BS. Even PRISONERS are treated more humanely.

Okay, I'm a bit angry myself, now!!!

Hi Yvonne,
If the door were not locked then he would have been able to open it up and walk out. I would file a formal complaint. Kids like this have rights, I dont care if you are in the US, UK or Timbuktoo. This is borderline abuse. If you were the one locking your child in a closet at home, child protection would be beating down your door to take him away, at least that is how it works here. You have every right to be pi**ed off. You need to write a formal letter that your son is NOT to be locked in a room like that, physically restrained or whatever you choose. If he needs to be "restrained" somewhere until you can pick him up, then he needs to be in a classroom with someone watching over him until you can pick him up. He should not be locked somewhere where no one is watching, that is a fire hazard and if he should panic, he could hurt himself. I can't imagine they would want a lawsuit if he is hurt. You tell them that. Go in there pi**ed off. Tell them they have NO RIGHT to do this to your child. I am angry for you! This is neglect and abuse on their part and you need to tell them that.

hi christine,
thanks i needed to here that.i'll read it again before i go into school.ds never has meltdowns anywhere apart from school,i've not even seen him do it,so when school tell me whats happened and how hes reacted its all very odd, nothing seems to add up.why is it he only behaves like that at school and nowhere else.they have said its because there is so many kids to just 1 teacher.but he goes to a breakfast club where there is 60 kids in 1 big room.
still fuming but not so much with myself now.thanks again yvonne xxx

Hi Paula,

at present i'm having a tough time not marching into school and demanding someones head on a platter, if this was happening in an old folks home it would be all over the papers.

OMG Yvonne!
My heart hurts for you and your child. WTF>>>>>there has to be some kind of investigation or legal action here.
YOU have to confront this teacher.......your child is your child dx'ed or NOT

Please update when you get some headway
