Help with the sound of AS

I am filling out the Gilliams Autism Rating Scale... I was supposed to fill it out awhile ago but I am confused because it says how many times in a 6 hour period does your child do this?

Well my child may not do these things in a 6 hour period, because he is into his gameboy that I can't get him away from, or something else he obsesses with, like his selling/money episodes....

Anyway, I figured out most of it, but I am so confused when they ask about his language. My son's language is weird sounding to me, I don't know how to say it really, its interrupted in sentences, he pauses, and when he pauses, he says "And ah huh" all thru his sentences. He will say Island but say it like IIIIIslannnnnd (like going up a hill and then going down), and then continue with the sentence. He ALWAYS starts a sentence with mom, mom, mom, and continue with the sentence.... He does that alot.

In this test they ask.....Speaks (or signs) with flat affect or with dysrhythmic patterns.

I have searched all over the internet, what does the dysrhythmic patterns mean????? I don't think he speaks with a flat affect, but I just don't know. I need to hear an example of this.

Thanks for any help and examples you can give me.

Thinking some more about this... he will also in mid sentence say "That, then change it to "They" and then will change it back to "That" and then continue with his sentence.

He will talk about the same thing for hours... we spent an hour driving to the docs one day and all he talked (non stop) was about his pokemon game he was playing with his gameboy, and the facts of every pokemon in the game. My friend said that was called perserverance, but I don't know.

Anyway if any of you with kids that do the same thing that can give me examples.... maybe sound examples on the internet.... pls help. I need to get these forms back to the doc so he can decide what part of the NEPSY to do for him. I really want to get this testing done before school starts again, so he can get the help he needs with learning and such.
Thanks :)

I take dysrythmic to mean without a normal rythm or with an odd rythm. From what you are talking about with the stopping and starting and such I would say it is dysrythmic. Mike does that with almost an odd stuttering but not really stuttering kind of thing. It is like it takes him longer to put together what he wants to say or can't stay focused on what he is saying.

As for flat affect I didn't really notice that until it was pointed out to me. Mike is very expressive but when he is he is typically doing "voices" and it is overly expressive. When he is just talking to us it is rather flat and almost too mature sounding and other times he does his little robot voice.

Cait has a flat tone of voice and used to have this weird sing song quality. I never noticed until someone pointed it out. To me it was just Cait. Again it is kind of like almost too mature sounding and very serious most of the time. She also uses few gestures which I didn't notice until it was pointed out.

I would rate both as has having a flat affect or dysrythmic speech if that is helpful to you.

Hi guys,
Thank you so much, yes that was very helpful! Like you said with Cait, its not really something you notice, if they have always talked like that you know? You just know it doesn't sound like all of the other kids sound.

I finished the form and got it in today.
Thanks again!
