Henry's tour of local PBS station . . .

Glen and I took Henry to tour our local PBS tv station last night. Henry really seemed to enjoy it. We got to see the studio in which they were preparing to go live for a pledge drive, the giant satellite dishes outside, the rooms with many, many tv screens showing the incoming shows from the satellite dishes and what was outgoing to the different tv channels--regular, cable, direct, and dish.

Henry's favorite part BY FAR was when we walked into the Program Manager's office. She had a dry-erase board *just like his* with all the times of the day and the shows that aired in each time slot. (Henry writes tv schedules on his dry-erase board whenever he is at home and awake.) She also had a bookshelf full of toys from different PBS shows behind her desk. Henry asked her about those. She told him that they had a policy that if a PBS show stops airing, then they have to get rid of the toy(s) from that show. He asked her why she had a Jay Jay the Jet Plane when that show doesn't come on anymore and why she had a Clifford puppy, but no Clifford the Big Red Dog. She explained the Jay Jay the Jet Plane comes on one of the other stations that they service. And she hadn't even noticed that she didn't have a Big Red Clifford.

He was very talkative and animated (for him) with her. He has asked me before what the job is called in which he would get to make the tv schedule, and he told me that is what he wants to be when he grows up.

We didn't get to stay for the actual live taping, because dh didn't want to wait around for 30 minutes. But I made sure to show Henry the phone bank and all the people sitting at the phones, so when we got home I could show him the same thing on our tv.

It was really interesting, and Henry said he would like to go back sometime. That is SUPER HIGH PRAISE.

very cool! way to go mom and dad! sounds like he's a program manager in the making. it's really neat when they can see an actual job that goes along w/ something they love so much.

Actually, we just recently got DirecTV but before that, Henry watched exclusively our local PBS tv shows. He dropped them for Noggin, but I knew someone from church who worked at PBS and called her to see if she'd show Henry around. He had told me that he wanted to be a program director when he grew up, so I thought that would be a neat place for him to see. She was more than happy to let us come visit.

And this morning, instead of turning to Noggin to watch Dora before school, Henry insisted on watching Curious George and Clifford on PBS.
