He's teaching himself programming!

We've always known that David has a lot of potential. He's very intelligent, but he drives us nuts because he tends to set huge, unattainable goals for himself, and then gets very frustrated when he runs into difficulty.
Well, not this time. He's been wanting to make his own computer game, but had no idea where to start. I found this thing online www.simplecodeworks.com, which is a programming language aimed at kids. I looked at it a bit, and figured it would probably be yet another thing where he insists on jumping in at the deep end and then gives up immediately. But it wasn't.
He skimmed through the tutorial, and now is writing his own programs. He's working on one that has a little guy (a circle with eyes) on a colored background, and the player makes choices as to where the guy is going to do. The guy doesn't move on the screen, but the background changes color and a message says things like, "Edmund is now in the jungle. Go north or east to find the healing herbs he needs."
He's learned a whole lot, and I'm so proud of him! I've been trying to teach myself the language as well, but he's picking it up faster. (And I majored in computer science for a year at university!)
I'm just thrilled to buckets that he's picking up a skill that might actually be useful in life, AND he's enjoying it. How cool is that?! (Ooh, I hope I don't jinx anything by saying that.)
Anyway, I just needed to brag. Life has been kind of tough lately, with both kids having major sleep issue, and both schools being generally annoying as usual. Example: Every Friday, they blast hip-hop music all over the area where the kids eat lunch. Usually David goes out onto the field to get away from the noise (which gets him so riled up he ends up in tears), but the field has been off-limits lately. His aide tells him, "just relax". Hmmm. But that's not what this post is about, so I'll stop there. :)
