Hi KErry, I read you post below and I also have a Jacob. My Jacob will by 2 in October. I am wondering what kinds of things you saw in him that led to his diagnosis. I am currently playing the waiting game. We have seen the dev. pediatrician team about 5 times and they still say it's personality. My jacob is getting ready to start EI next month. Can you please tell me some of the issues you saw in your son that led to his diagnosis?
Thanks so much

Hi Sonya, my Jacob is not my first child so I kind of knew where and what he should be doing at certain ages...he never pointed at things, never imitated, never waved bye bye or seemed to care if I or anyone was home or not. He still is pretty much nonverbal, he says 3 words and he will be 2 1/2 in April. He is a really good object spinner. He spins anything that will spin, he has an opening/closing door obsession, poor eye contact, likes to play alone....pretty much all of the warning signs that you read. I've knows something wasn't quite right when he was about 14 months old...and was proven correctly...he's doing really well right now. He imitates, plays with his sisters (twin sister) and laughs and plays and cries hard when I leave...I would go with your gut feeling and don't let someone tell you otherwise. Our doc. is wonderful, she tells me that I see him all day long and she see's him 10 mins a few times a month, mother knows best.

Good Luck!

Hi Keri! THanks for the reply. Like I said, I am a sp. ed teacher and knew Jacob was different at about 1 month. He was 4 weeks early and has never had good eye contact. But he does imitate, wave bye, and has some words. He is a lot different than his older sister (who will be 4 in may). Emma had about 80 words at 18 months, and Jacob (at 16 months) has about 15, but does not use them consistently. The dr's say they see the red flags I am concerned about, but will continue to monitor him. I go back in April for another dev. eval with him. Jacob goes to a sitter when I am at work and she thinks he is fine. He is very inquisitive about mechanical things (which freaks me out), but DH is a mechanical engineer and my MIL said DH was like that when he was little too. Anyhow, I hate feeling like I have to work so hard with him. Emma was a piece of cake. She just did everything like she was suppose too. Jacob is hitting his milestones, but I feel like I have to work with him to get him there.
Best of luck. This is a great board and I hope things get better with your sister.

Sonya,
I don't mean to butt in but I feel really bad for you because I remember so clearly the waiting game and in fact I am doing it all over again this time with Ella. Don't let any doctor tell you to wait and see. Follow your own intuition about this. I had Jake in E.I from 13 months old and didn't get an official diagnosis until he was almost 2 and a half.Doc after Doc told me he was fine and in fact when he was 20 months he saw a doctor that told me he wasn't autistic but he couldn't rule out AS but he didn't believe early intervention worked. I can't remember if your son is in E.I? Is he getting any services for speech? Keep me posted!

hi Teresa! Jacob is going to start EI soon. I am just waiting for the EI to contact us. He is not getting speech currently, but my bachelors degree is in speech therapy, so I kind of do those things anyway. I am hot and cold about what I think is wrong. SOmetimes I think it might be sensory b/c when I push him in a car or put him on a swing he is a different kid afterwards. So, he might be underresponsive. Anyhow, his vocab is expanding and he said 4 new words yesterday. And today, he crawled on to the kitchen table while I was eating some cereal. I gave him a bite and he leaned over and kissed me on the lips. How cute it that? But there are still plenty of issues!!
I am so glad for your concern and your guidance. Your words of wisdom are always so helpful to me.

Thanks so much!!
