Hi evryone just wondering if you can helpus again, I have scheduled an evaluation for my little boy Max with a developmenal ped.
I will give you a little fill of the history. firstly we live in England and so our healthcare is slightly different. I have been worried about Max since he was 8 months old, but i can't really put my finger on the problem, I know he can hear and see, but he has been slower with his social development than his peers, he pointed at 11 months, clapped and waved at 12months and of course he has very little language, he is now 17 months, he does seem to understand the need to communicate and does say "what's that" alot, he points to things he wants and things that interest him and he brings things to us, he also seems to copy getures he gives us five does soo big pretends to fly, makes animal noises, plays with toys, can point to one body part when asked, but still very little language mainly gestures to communicate, he also seems to have some concentration issues and is never still but sleeps well, no major shows of temper and can follow commands, but I STILL FEEL SOMETING particularly when he is with other kids.
So my question is what do I need to go to the evaluation with? i don't know if this is a language problem or more What do I ask? should I write down my concerns? although they are very non specific, MY family think I am totally overeacting. Any help with this appointment would be appreciated.
Thanks for listening to me ramble
love Sam

Sam,

Welcome. I am Irish and lived in the UK for a few years. I married a Scot. However my kids were born over here, so I don't know the system over there at all.

I think it is always good advice to write up a comprehensive profile of your child to share with professionals, and to have for yourself. Don't just record the areas of concern, but also things he does well, areas of strength or superiority, what his interests and skills are, the ages at which he hit milestones, and what concerns you have.

It is a great thing to write up every six months to a year. Don't update the old profile, write a new one. Over time, these profiles will give you an excellent picture of how he is developing, which areas he gained most strength (and why), and which need work (and why). It is also a good thing to have available on those 'dark;' days when you watch typically developing children. You can look back on his record and see how far he has come.

Good luck. There was a woman from Scotland on this board for awhile, and another from down south somewhere, but I haven't seen either of them in awhile.
