I saw this special on PBS last night. The ladies name was Brenda Watson I think. Though she was talking about other more common digestive problems and even autoimmune disorders (autism was not mentioned) it really helped explain to me what leaky gut was, why omega's, enzymes and probiotics are so important and why how our digestion works affects us.
She also had a easy formula for healthy living to repair these types of health issues.
This is for adults I assume. She has a whole kid section in her book but not sure about what the amounts were for them.
H. - High fiber foods and supplements (she was specific on the kinds. Flax and 2 others, preferably organic - 35mg per day)
O. - Omega 3, 2 grams per day
P. - Probiotics - 6-8billion parts per day.
E - Enzymes (digestive) with meals.
She talked about getting some of this naturally but that supplements would likely also have to be used in this day and age to keep it to the level it needs. sources for high fiber were your raw fruits and veggies as well as whole grains, etc. Omega- the best is salmon but hard to get that every day plus the mercury issue. Probiotics - should be enteric coated to get to the right part of digestive track. Yogurt, pickles, sourkraut, anything fermented is a good source for this (go Beer! though she didn't say that, lol). And enzymes basically came from your body but the process starts by THOROUGHLY chewing food.
Anyway, wanted to share. I thought it was pretty interesting.
