We finally just had our first successful salon haircut, at age 3 years and 9 months. But it took a lot of work to get us there. I went through months of bringing him to my hairdresser and doing the bear hug method. He screamed and kicked and bopped me with his head. I endured the stares and helpful comments.
I have been going to my haridresser for 20 years, since I was a teenager, and she mercifully offered to come to our house and cut his hear. He is the only client she does this for. We did that for about 9 months. I sat him in the booster seat (buckled in) and in front of the tv while she did the cutting. He became increasingly tolerant, but clearly still does not like the hair falling on him. Finally I thought he was ready to try the salon again. I brought a portable dvd player with us, so he had a favorite show to distract him. He did great, and I was thrilled. What a relief. Bobby will get there sooner or later. If I was rich I would give my hairdresser a million dollars for the kindness she did us. It will always mean the world to me.
Here's what we did.....
He actually did better at the hairdresser then at home. He was so petrified that he'd sit still for her but not me. But still would not let her get around his ears. I just got lazy and hated paying for it so I bought some decent clippers and started doing it at home all the time.
I'd sit him in front of the tv with newspaper on the floor. Clippers are best because fast is the key. That seemed to work the best. Lots of breaks to calm him down. I'd stop the video when he got up so the video reinforced him sitting down.
Now I can cut his hair in the bathroom(he's 6.) Still with alot of breaks. But now I've discovered that he likes to be brushed with the brush that came with the kit to brush the hair off. He hates the hair on him; it itches. So I take breaks and brush him vigorously all over and it seems to help.
His OT never did brushing with him, but now I wonder if it would help him at school some?!?!
