DS is 6 and we have homeschooled for the past 2 years. He is curious about public school so we recenlty met with the principal to see what they would offer us. DS is perfomring above grade level in most areas and it appears my choice is to either have him accelerated-if the academic tests back up the IQ tests and psych report-or to keep him at grade level with supports. Their feeling is that if he can preform academically he would not need supports as they only provide them to help kids who are struggling academically. My concern is that we are fairly certain for next year he will test into a 3rd/4th mix, socially he wouldn't fit in and he would need accomadations for handwriting as he would be young 7 yr old in Sept. If we placed him in 2nd where he would be bored out of his mind and a behavioral problem they would provide supports-OT and social skills. So my choice seems to be free services (we pay out of pocket now) and a stagnant education or an appropriate education and no services. SO much for my tax dollars. So we continue to homeschool. If you decide to send him to public school, be sure to get an IEP before he starts. The services you're paying for out-of-pocket might be much better than anything the school would give him.

I am homeschooling ds as of last few months. We have had him in special needs schools paid for by our district (which have not worked out for ds), and are now looking into private, non-funded programming which we would have to sue DOE for reimbursement. If all that does not work out, we will continue to homeschool, with home services such as OT and speech paid for by DOE.

By the way, under IDEA they cannot only afford assistanxe for children that are struggling academically at all, there are other considerations such as social issues and classroom modifications, OT for sensory, etc. You might want to consider getting an advocate to work with you, if this school district thinks that way, which is to say, they would therefore be denying your son accomosations he is due by law, where there is a need,,,

LOL, I have to go other because you missed what my kids have.

The reason I stipulate is because my kids aren't in a resource room placement. Thiers is considered one step more restrictive. You had resource with mainstreaming then self contained class with some exposure to mainstream kids. My kids are in a self contained class with mainstreaming/inclusion with Aide.

Cait is "Full inclusion special day class" with an aide to her inclusion classes and the special ed teachers support to the inclusion classes, etc.

Mike is in a self contained special education class as his home class and mainstreamed out from there for about 1/2 his day. He has a 1:1 aide for the entire day (mainstream, self contained, recess, etc)
