I don't know if this will help, but we got some great advice about time-outs when my youngest dd was 3. The psychologist who evaluated/dx'd her with pdd-nos specialized in children on the spectrum. We told him that when Lily would have a tantrum and we put her in her bed, she didn't seem to mind. When we put her in her time-out chair, she would scream her head off and would hurt herself or just knock the chair over. He told us that we needed to give her something to focus on during time-outs and it would enable her to sit longer and therefore begin to understand the concept. He suggested that we trace her feet on a piece of paper and tape them to the floor in front of her time-out chair. We used a cube chair so that her feet could be flat on the floor. Whenever she was in time-out, her told us to tell her to go "match her feet". Once her time-out was over, he told us not to talk about why she was in time-out, but to tell her "Thank you for matching your feet." and then move on. It actually worked! He also told us to not leave her in the chair for more than 2 minutes. He said that normally you leave a child in time-out for one minute per year of age, but in the case of children with an asd, that is waaay too long and would only further frustrate her. She is now 5.5 and she has much fewer meltdowns. I think learning how to talk between 3-4 yrs old helped her frustration level a lot. Hang in there! In can get easier as they grow older. I hope this helps.
