I haven't posted here in a long time but I just wanted to share an awesome accomplishment for my son Jacob!!! He is 3 1/2 and dx autistic...he is HORRIBLE getting his haircut, we it's hell for everyone involved, I usually end up leaving there covered in hair, tears, sweat and snot...today he was a different kid. He sat all by himself in the chair, he let them put the cape on, tied around his neck, and he even got an awesome little boy haircut, with no crying, whinning or anything! He sat still as could be...afterwards, he even picked out a sucker and actually ate it! He NEVER wanted one before!! He has the same girl do his hair everytime and she said, "Mom and dad are very proud of you". And we were!!!! Thanks, I just had to share!

I understand the whole haircut thing. We have retired alot of barbers in our area. I am the resident barber in our house. Needless to say, Adam ends up looking like a cancer paitent who's hair is coming back in from chemo. I know how awful that sounds, but he'd move so much I'd buzz too much in one spot!!! (sigh)

Anywho, I did it a few weeks ago, and it's the BEST job ever. He looks so sweet. I hardly had to yell and he sat very well for me.

I am so happy for you

That really is a huge accomplishment. We went through years of this battle with Claire, but finally around age 5 she was able to sit relatively still for a haircut.

Rock on Jacob!

You know its so funny, back eons ago, when Chris was 2 (and before anything came up about autism with him) He would FREAK over a hair cut. It was bad. So bad that I just let go of the whole thing. By the time he hit kindergarten and 6 he had very long hair lol. I think all of the people thought I was just hippyish or something. But really it was impossible to do with him.

Well anyway luckily his hair bothered him so much, and constantly got in his eyes, that by April of that year he decided to have dad shave it for him.

Sometimes its a struggle, but for the most part he will cooperate. Thank God.

Keri,

That is HUGE news!!! I understand you wanting to share with people who truly get it.

We still struggle with this issue. "hairdresser aversion" is a family curse. DH buzzes his own head, and the rest of us have long hair -including Peter (thankfully, that 70s thing is "in" right now).
