Rose,

My one bit of advice, which I should remember myself more often, is to keep calm when the tantrums are happening.

HEAT, that's excellent and TRUE. Always look for the physical, just lke when they were babies and screamed, you remember ... feed, clean butt, nap, burps, gas pain?

Malcolm has now (age 9) become SO much better at knowing hungry, thirsty, tired, overstimulated, too hot (he is almost NEVER too cold, likes cold). And being homeschooled, he no longer has the stress of teachers who don't get him, so much more is within his control and levels of challenge are appropriate for him, SO no meltdowns.

But years ago, we had 'em. I don't remember that we had them at the high level you are describing. But we know other kids who did. If this seems to have escalated recently, it bears more investigation. Maybe there is something going on with her psysiologically? Food allergy, was she recently sick or now getting sick (always a rough time)?

Yes, think of the meltdowns are problems to be solved, ways to soothe, ways to forestall, keep working on tactics to deal with them when they happen so you are not so overwhelmed, just wishing they would never come. You will find your own way with your dd. Always remember the meltdowns are MUCH worse for them than you, very terrifying and they don't want to be having them. They do need our help.
