I don't much care for our children" (quote by Katherine Hepburn in Lion in Winter)

This has been John's and My pet line for this week said in secret complete with Katherine accent. All we have to do is start with "I have a confession to make...." and the other starts cracking up. Usually when they are acting particularly difficult. SOmetimes you have to laugh or you will cry. They (particularly the boy) have not been on thier best behavior. We got the "My! You have your hands full." comment at church today. To which my husband says "This is only 1/2 of them". (He got that line from ME!)Ok so all 4 are there, but we tend to be a bit snarky with strangers when they start that stuff. Like I said, you gotta laugh.

Just thought I would share

Renee,

Your post totally cheered me up! I'm going to get that movie "Lion in Winter". I'd like to hear that line!

Thanks,

"This is only 1/2 of them".....serves them right for sticking their noses in....too funny!

...and you wonder why your kids quote movie lines? I'll have to get that one out, BTW.

I love the "half of them quote" I must remember that one. It reminded me of one of my rare comeback gems:

I well remember August 2002, in the Wal-mart, Pocahontas, Arkansas; Peter (then 4), was engaging in his favorite protest at the time: Laying on the floor in a high-traffic area, limp and boneless. I was staring him down (there was no point trying to pick him up, it was like trying to pick up a melted 30lb popsicle), when a local lady decided to help the Irish yankee out, show her a thing or two, and take this kid in hand (I loved when people did this -I used to just step back and watch the show). So after about 3 minutes, and an ear-splitting scream from Peter (still boneless on the floor), she backed away, confused, looking at me for some sort of explanation.

paula,

are you seriously telling me that some stranger walked up and physically tried to pick up your child and straighten him out? i can believe they would verbally say something, but that one is too much.

as for this break, i am ready to strangle not the kids, but dh. why the F#$% is it that he stays up til midnight watching tv and thinks it's his right to make up for the lost sleep while sleeping in later. meanwhile, i have gone to bed at 9pm in anticipation of waking up at 0530 with the kids.

i want everyone to go back to school and work and give me some time alone in this house so i can unwind. argh.....v

Man I am sorry Val. Soon. Very soon.

Actually DH and I have both been lazy. Even the kids are sleeping into 7 (YEAH!) and I can hear them from my room whilst I lay there 1/2 asleep.

This week the kids start back to a half normal schedule. Thier afterschool activities are back so at least it will be partly normal. I actually just emailed about a job and I think I may go back to work soon. So much for relaxation. I will have to cut back on my volunteering though.

That's ok, they have tons they use too.

Shhhhhh, I know this is a naughty one but the other day the kids were acting particularly odd. Mike definitely looked like a kid with needs. OK so I allow stimming, no big deal. He usually blends a little better in public. At least not enough to draw looks. Well we got some stares. John and I after the kids get in the car and are out of ear shot come up with (quietly) "We all ride in a little yellow bus, a little yellow bus, a little yellow bus" to the tune of yellow submarine.

I think it is the stares. They used to bug me but now you have to come up with a way to deal with them. Humor works for us.

We do use much humor and stuff positively too. LOL. I am looking back at this thread thinking I must look like a horrible mom joking about my kids. But we laugh with them just as much about silly things and have a good time. They are great kids, honest.

>>I am looking back at this thread thinking I must look like a horrible mom joking about my kids.<<

Honestly, Renee, there's no danger of that! Anyway, it's so much better to laugh than it is to go crazy with guilt and embarrassment. I feel like a much healthier, better mom when I can step back and laugh for a bit; it's when I take everything a bit too seriously that I start to lose it!!! So, thanks for this thread -- anything that can make us laugh is a good, good thing!!!
