I have a question

Hi, I posted this question on the ASD board and I was just wondering if any of you guys have any information you could give me....thanks
My son Gabe just had speech with the school on wed.

Hi Jessie,
Welcome.
I read somewhere that they can't reliably dx AS or HFA until the child is 7 or so because the symptoms can be so subtle. Many kids on this board weren't dx until they are older. I didn't take Graham in until he was 7 and even then they hesitated giving me an AS dx because he was so young. Now at 9, he's definitely AS.
I'm not a professional but as a mom there are some possible flags in your description. Alot of AS/HFA kids have sensory needs and the possibility that he has a special interest are two that might indicate something. The fact that he is so young makes it difficult to say.
In any case, welcome to the board.

Hi Jessie and welcome to the board.
Sorry for the delay in responding to you post. It has been a busy Easter here.
I have to say, reading your description of Gabe, I do see a lot of red flags for a Spectrum disorder. However I am just a mom and no expert. There just seems to be a lot of imililarities between Gabe and my son Peter at that age. (I have pictures of us with a big steam engine too). But you know, getting a lot of help early on will make a huge difference. peter didn't develop functional language until he was 4½ and now he is mainstramed in 4th grade. he regained an awful lot of ground.
Does Gabe receive OT for sensory issues? If so, have you tried or considered brushing him? I know this helped a lot with my daughter's sleep issues (she flirts with the spectrum).
If you are concerned about a spectrum disorder, Can you get a referral to a neuropsychologist or a developmental pediatrician? One of those guys should be able to diagnose for sure.
Good luck and please feel free to stick around here and ask as many questions as you need to.

I have two spectrum kids. Liam (hfa) was 6 when he was finally dx but I had known since he was three, just kept fighting various "specialists." Cian was 4 when dx with AS, but again I think it was because I already had one on the spectrum and happened upon a great psychologist who also had a son with autism. Thus, Cian's subtle behaviours were more glaring to he and I.
I think if Cian had been my first he'd just have the tag significant developmental delays for education purposes but I honesly could care less if he was labelled with polka dot syndrome once he gets the services he needs.
