Middle school just sucks! I've gotten an email from Weston's resource teacher every single day this week. Today it is a copy of one from his language arts teacher. It basically says, Weston shut down and now won't do anything. He took a time out and came back and still couldn't get back to work. He was sitting all inside his jacket doing nothing because he wouldn't do his work and his teacher wouldn't let him read. I agree w/ her, but at that point, I think someone has to take charge and get him to a place where he can get on w/ his work. This teacher agrees that she can't verbally push him to get the work done, because he will melt down, but now we're at a stand still.

I am sitting here crying and wondering what in the world to do, nothing is working. I have another week of work (very intense week of work) and then I can really put everything I have into him, but what to do in the meantime? I give up.

I'm sorry middle school is sucking so bad (((((hugs))))). Do they have a resource room that he could go to? My ds goes to his when he is feeling too stressed out, meltdown, shutdown etc... There are usually only a couple of kids in there so he has a nice, safe quiet place to go. It usually doesn't take him long to calm down in this environment. If you don't already do this, maybe is it worth a shot.

Good luck, hope middle school gets better!

I am so sorry Betsy, can you not ask an aide for Weston ( I am going thru the same and pushing for someone to sit next to my son and make him do instead of them doing it).

SO your next step is to ask the school if he can copy (at home over the week end) whatever he missed. This way Weston will know that the work waits for him no matter what (isn't that what happens to us at work?). I am implementing this with my son too. So eventually he will get the idea and start doing it himself.

We are sitting on the fence for homeschooling. The school finally called and us they do not want us to homeschool and the supports will be discussed in an IEP meeting. Waiting for that and then going to decide.

(((((Betsy))))),

I am so, so sorry you guys are in this situation. I agree on the resource room thing, or finding some way to help Weston through these ddifficulties he is having.

Thanks for the chocolate and port. I did do the real chocolate thing today and have the worst headache! man, I hate feeling this way.

Weston has a 'get out of class/"jail" free pass' he's allowed to use it any time he's feeling overwhelmed. He used it 5x this week. He goes to the resource room and has a bean bag chair to sit on. He gets to settle down there, when the resource teacher sees that he's self calmed enough, she sets a timer for 10 more minutes, then he goes back to class. On Wed or Thurs (I can't remember which) when he had his major meltdown in science, the resource teacher walked him back to class and then watched for awhile to make sure he was ok.

The special ed person from the elementary school came and sat through several classes and observed him and the teachers, and talked w/ the resource teacher. Trouble is, he was just fine the day she was there. ARGHHH!

I think I'm going to set an arbitrary date of-- oh a week or two from now, if things are considerably better we'll be at least calling an IEP to get EVERYONE together to do some brainstorming to see what we can do to improve things at school.

I think part of the problem today was that language arts is at the end of the day, it's the end of a long week and he wasn't looking forward to the ride in the car, hang out while Warren and Amelia take lessons that happens on Friday evening, then we deal with Friday evening commute traffic and get Owen to soccer practice. It's just how everything happened to fall activity wise. I feel like the whole family tiptoes around him, he needs to deal w/ having to be out and about sometimes so the other kids can have lessons and a life.

Thanks for letting me vent!
