I made the call

For the last month or so I have been going back and forth on if I should call early intervention for Zane. He has had chronic ear infections for about three months. Almost two weeks ago we had tubes put in to help drain the fluid stuck behind his eardrum.

Right after, and I mean like 45min after having the tubes placed he said ma ma ma. He has said ma before but stopped saying it. Yay...it's back. Well he has stopped saying it again.

I have been worried about his speech. Not so much how much he says, but more along the lines that he doesn't understand what we are saying to him.

I don't think he is autistic...but I guess it's a little early to really tell.

Anyway I finally made the call to early intervention today. I should hear back from them in the next few days to schedule an intake and then an evaluation. I was really hoping to avoid having two children in therapy...but I need to go with my gut. If Z just turns out to be a late talker...no harm done in doing therapy...but if he has a language disorder like Gabe...well it will be good that we start sooner then later.

well done, Jessie.

This way you will at least have a baseline of his functioning, which is always good to have for the future.

good luck!

I remember making the call when Margaret's speech wasn't up to level of a typically developing child, she was about 1 at the time too.

Good for you Jessie!! I know it's hard, but you are right...it certainly won't hurt and if he does need help the sooner the better. :)

Hey Jessie,

I'm in the same boat as you. My other DS is 13 months, and I'm not quite sure he is OK, as I have nothing to compare him to (other DS with ASD is 4). I found out that you can get your younger child into a sibling study. I am going to inquire about this at the treatment facility where my other son was DX'd. Is there anything like this in your State? They did tell me that they would check my baby when he is 18 months, but I dodn't want to wait that long.

Heidi.
