I don't post much, but I read several times each day. I just wanted to share how well my son (AS) is doing in school. Last year, he came up from a pre-school reading level to early 2nd grade level by the end of the year.
Yes, we are working on the tantruming, but his teacher is wroking on it with him, also. It is so nice to have a TEAM!
So here is what his teacher sent this afternoon:
Hey Crystal!
I knew that Christopher was in an Intervention classroom last year with Mrs. Lusk. We don't have an Intervention class for third grade. Currently, he is working on grade level. He is doing GREAT and succeeding on this level. I am so proud of him. He really is brilliant! The only modifications that I am implementing with him is SOMETIMES I am lessening his workload. For example, if the class has 40 math problems to complete...I can assess his work by allowing him to only complete 15 or 20. Also, in the mornings with Daily Oral Geography I have his typed up for him already. He just provides me with the answers. On Daily Oral Language he is allowed to only make the corrections. This makes it less stressful for him, but still provides me with the info. I need to know (if he has grasped the concept). I used to give him extra time to complete assignments, but he doesn't seem to need that anymore. I have noticed that he is finishing everything the same time as everyone else!! He is doing incredibly well!!! Also, his handwriting is getting better and better with spacing, etc... Mrs. Curtis was pulling him in the mornings, but the school has been unable to get a sub for her so he has been with us the whole day (which I think is great!).
The only thing that I would like for us to work on is tantrums that he sometimes has. He had two today. One was at lunch. They are not allowed to "save" seats. He had a seat saved and was asked to scoot down a seat. He turned around and stomped and kicked. Then again at the end of the day, another student reminded him to take a book home (Christopher's group did not have that particular assignment). He was tired and gets VERY angry when someone tells him what to do and he screamed and kicked and slung papers. I talked to him about HOW he should have told her that he didn't need that book. I talked to her about minding her own business, etc.... We will work on that together. He will be fine!
He is definitely an auditory learner. Everything he hears he remembers! It's amazing! :)
Thanks for sharing in my kid brag. I really am doing my best NOT to shout it from the rooftops!
Crystal

I'm glad things are going well. It sounds like he has a good teacher. That makes such a big difference.
