I sent the note requesting that Henry be tested for special services. Today was his first day back after Fall Break.
I just said in the note that I had Henry evaluated, and the ped. psych. doc recommended that he have the following tests: The doc told me that the school does *not* give one of them, but I went ahead and put them all on the list. I figured--what could it hurt?
I hope I hear from the school quickly, and that they can do the testing asap.
I emailed Henry's kindergarten teacher from last year. (We *adore* her.) I asked her if she had heard of Asperger's Syndrome and what her opinion was regarding Henry having it.
She emailed me back and said that they had an In-Service right before Fall Break, and a speaker talked about Asperger's Syndrome. She said it did make her think of Henry a little. I appreciate her honesty with me.
I *didn't* say what the probably diagnosis was in my request for testing, because I really don't want the tests skewed in any way. Kwim? Of course, that doesn't mean that Miss Kindergarten Teacher won't talk to Henry's current teacher. *Or* that Henry's current teacher (Mrs. G) didn't also think of Henry at the In-Service meeting.

Robin,
Getting the services Henry needs is great! Hopefully, they will start doing the testing soon too! Personally, the waiting around.....is sooo hard for me!! lol
I would've asked for all the tests too. You are right....couldn't hurt!

Henry's teacher (Mrs. G) sent a note home in Henry's folder today that says I have to send a written request from the doctor to get those tests done.
Is that true?
I *have* the assessment request form, and I made a copy of it (covering the fees) to send tomorrow. I just wasn't sure if that was accurate--that I couldn't request the testing for him *myself* based on our parent-teacher conferences from last year and this year.
I think the teacher is a bit confused. There is a difference between a medical Dx and an educational classification for the sake of receiving accomodations. The two don't always go hand-in-hand. We've never needed a letter from a doctor in order to request testing. Now if they were to deny you the testing, perhaps then you'd need a letter...I guess something could be different in your state/district, but I seriously doubt it. What if you have a parent/child who can't afford medical are? Would they require a letter then??? It almost sounds discriminatory.
Having said that, since it's really early in the game, you might want to just go ahead and have the doctor's nurse fax something to the school. You're in a situation where you're going to need to pick your battles...and this one may not be worth the fight. Only you can decide that.

Post your question at the IEP board as well. I have never heard of needing a doctors note for a request.
Not all states accept parents strictly as referring parties but usually if the parent has a concern the school will at least hold the equivalent of a student study team to discuss concerns and then develop an assessment plan if appropriate.
I did think that IDEA had a provision for parents requesting assessment. But ask Steph at the IEP board cause I am not sure with the new IDEA2004

You have the right to request an evaluation, in accordance with federal law.
Well, I *have* the doctor's form requesting the tests, and I made a copy to send to school today.
I was pretty sure that didn't sound right.
I'm having a bigger problem now because Mrs. G told me in the note that Mrs. D (the special ed lady) said that I needed to send the information that I got from the doctor.
*She* should know what is correct.
