Identifying t-shirt when travelling

For my sins, i am taking Cian and Roan back to Ireland for a week in April (poor Liam just can't miss an entire week of school, and I would have to shoot myself with three of them all by myself, never mind the cost of the tickets.)

Anyhoo, I've been n international flights before with just two kids (and neither dx at the time....yeesh). For walking through the airport and on the plane I want to design a t-shirt that says something like "I have Autism/Aspergers- please be patient with me"

I remember someone on the board did something similar when taking their ds to Disney, can't remember who though. It's a direct overnight flight so that shouldn't be too bad (coming back will be ard though, daytime, no naps). I must be mental!!!!

I don't have any suggestions for design, but I would say go with a bright color.

I am sorry if I offended you. I should not have said what i said. But I can't help it sometimes in the way I feel.

Again with a 4 year old it may be different than a 13 year old. I do like the idea of the medialert bracelts for the older kids if they do have the tendency to take off. YOu all have to realize. Josh isn't the type to well take off. I think he tried it maybe once. But we had had an argument and he just proceeded to annouce he was going to walk home. Usually if Josh gets that pi$$ed off he just will walk around the block to cool off.

But Josh can be restless. But what we have found was if DH sat next to him when we traveled on airplane he was fine. Again maybe it is maturity on his part. I just don't think he would where a T-Shirt announcing to the world that he is different. He feel awkward enough sometimes. Even with traveling where people would not necessarliy know him. And we tend to do a lot of camping and Josh is the type who will approach other kids in attempts to well to get to know them as friends even temporaprily, like when we are a cruise last year. For a child in his case would tell the other kids to run the other way.

I also put my kids in bright colored shirts when traveling. But I also have another reason for not having a shirt. And that if you point out your child's name, and phone number esp if that child is way too trusting. It kind of opens the door for a predator to well gain achild's trust. How did he know i have ASD? How did he know my phone number..etc? It is too easy then to lead that child

I agree with the predator thing actually. This is why it would be my cell and ONLY at those races where there may be an issue of lots of confusion, etc. I thought about having him run with one in the neighborhood but decided against it due to the predator thing. though I would LOVE to see a predator just try with Mike. They will likely get a LOT more than they bargain for.

Both my ASD kids have medic alert bracelets. However, it didn't help the one time cait had a issue with a police officer in our home. He never read it and I had to tell him on the phone she was ASD and then he understood much better. As such I have been considering a autism window sticker but again I am thinking this may leave too much info up for predators.

Decisions decisions.

I tend to agree more with the sticker thing. But I can see my kids even the NT ones being way too trusting. I know Josh responds to friendly people. His stranger danger radar does not go up right away. He understands the concept and he knows

I see both sides of this.

Hi Dee,

I think for a little one, the t-shirt is a good idea in airport settings.

These tatoos are great.

Thanks for the great ideas; I love the tatttoo idea, although I am still leaning towards a t-shirt as well.

I have to say I am a bit thrown that my simple request for ideas also became a bit of a debate. I understand this is a somewhat open forum, but I do wish that the overly potent opinions and feelings about this topic had remained with those who felt strongly enough to make it an uncomfortable thread; at least it did become so for me. But rganks for the good ideas that were here,

Um, did you see my last post? I never asked for opinions, just specific ideas for wording on an item I have already decided to use. You're entitled to your opinions I know, but honestly they weren't invited. As for labelling him, I was on the plane last time and Liam (then 6) had to pee right as we were taxieing to the runway. You try and stop a 6 year old Autie from running to the bathroom no matter what the situation; I was just about lynched by half the plane, untilI literally had to roar at everyone he had Autism.....hmmm, a label sure was warranted there, wasn't it! I have never felt judged on this board before, but I guess there's always a first time. Now can we get over this and move on please.
