Identifying t-shirt when travelling

For my sins, i am taking Cian and Roan back to Ireland for a week in April (poor Liam just can't miss an entire week of school, and I would have to shoot myself with three of them all by myself, never mind the cost of the tickets.)

Anyhoo, I've been n international flights before with just two kids (and neither dx at the time....yeesh). For walking through the airport and on the plane I want to design a t-shirt that says something like "I have Autism/Aspergers- please be patient with me"

I remember someone on the board did something similar when taking their ds to Disney, can't remember who though. It's a direct overnight flight so that shouldn't be too bad (coming back will be ard though, daytime, no naps). I must be mental!!!!

Dee,

Actually I find this board to really be very mild when it comes to opinions and such on threads. I don't know of a single other board where the thread would have stayed that mild on a topic that is by it's nature very heated among the autism community.

I understand your point but I think the expectation that opinions and debate won't enter topics here is probably not realistic. If anything I think that this board is particularly immune to such debate but they will on occasion happen.

I am sorry your feelings were hurt but I do think that a variety of people are entitled to their variety of opinion and expressing those as long as they remain within the Terms of Service.

So it's ok to hijack a post and then proclaim opinionated judgement, even when it wasn't invited? I'm sorry I respectfully must disagree, because such opinions weren't invited nor welcome. This has really gotten ridiculous,

Hi, Dee,

We've flown or traveled quite a bit w/ our kids. When they were younger we would dress all of them alike (I still dress the youngest 2 in bright orange or yellow). Also, we had a polariod camera that we'd take a picture of them when we got to the airport so that we could just hand it to security if we lost them (along w/ each child's particular quirks-- kind of like Paula's ER letter), that way the child was wearing the exact clothing and it was a most recent picture. Each of our children has a 'lovey' of some kind and when traveling we'd put that in a backpack that the child would carry (as young as 2 they would NOT part w/ that backpack, it was their lifeline) and in the backpack we'd pin a business card w/ the child's name and important info including cell phone #. We also would make sure they were wearing a bright tshirt (and we'd dress them all alike-- orange and white stripe t-shirts were my favorite) w/ a pocket where we would also pin a business card in case they got lost. People in the airport would comment on 4/5 kids w/ orange and white stripe t-shirts all walking w/ the momma! I would usually wear an orange t or another bright t so my kids could pick me out of the crowd as well. We also used those tshirts at the county fair, when camping/hiking, and at the zoo or children's museum.

When Weston was 4 he didn't have a Dx but he wouldn't talk to anyone but Mom and Dad. We also didn't have the security issues that there are today. Now, we prep our kids for weeks about the rules of going through security, about all the things they'll be asked to do. With our kids we always fly out of a smaller airport at a light travel time so that security won't be so difficult. The last time we flew out of O'Hare (chicago) we had the airline give DH and Weston a special pass-- so they could go through a different security line for the handicapped. This was a godsend. He didn't have to stand in the line w/ all those people we didn't know and he got to watch all the rest of his siblings go through security. Thankfully, none of us was stopped to have the thorough search done (once when flying w/ DH I got pulled aside for a thorough search(I was the 7th passenger), he couldn't handle that!

I never had the Dx at a young enough age to have an actual autism t. I think that's a good idea. I wouldn't put my phone # on it though. way too many weirdos out there!

Katherine, I have to say...as a mother of a child who is currently obsessed (hopefully its on the outs...I think something else will soon replace it) with Little Einsteins, I laughed out loud at your post about the names your son gave the security guard.
