IEP Thurs to change to autism box

We called an IEP meeting since receiving our dx last month. We are changing Liam from the "other health impaired" to the "autism" category. The teacher wants to set up behavioral goals and social goals for him too.

Our annual IEP will be in April. That will be the one for kindegarten. I guess they will do some retesting before that one.

Does anyone know what behavioral and social goals look like? I have no idea what to expect.

Last night I had a dream that we were at our IEP. The table of people sitting around it was extremely large and retangular. About 25 people were there. I was wondering "who are all these people and why are they at our IEP?" lol!! I guess I am a little queasy and nervous!!!

My son is much older than yours but his social goal is: In one year, Kyle will communicate effectively in different speaking situations by following the rules of conversation with peers and adults during 2 of 3 observed exchanges. He has 19 sub-goals or benchmarks is what I think they call them. They are based on the book Navigation the Social World: A Curriculum for Individuals with Asperger’s Syndrome, High Functioning Autism and Related Disorders
by Jeannette McAfee. The sub-goals are body language, proximity, eye contact, tone of voice, volume, stays on topic, transitions, takes turns, chooses topic of interest to others, responds to other peoples cues, facial expression, nodding, interjecting, recalls previous conversations, uses "rescue terms" for pauses, asks for clarification, closes conversations appropriately, makes encouraging statements, hello & goodbye.

I hope that helps a little. Kyle doesn't have any behavioral goals so I don't know about that.

PS I've had huge IEP meetings like in your dream. I lived through it ;)

LOL Samantha! About actually having IEP meetings like that and living to tell about it! Those are really helpful goals for me to have, thanks. Our IEP meeting this time will actually be pretty small and all the meetings we have had have been less than 10 people at the very most!

Thanks Tasha, you give me strength! Those goals seem so obvious but I couldn't seem to get them down for myself. I'm so glad I asked here. My ds is actually in pre-K now and I think the dream I had is about the April IEP where we will plan for Kindy in Sept(such a big transition, at least for me)! I'm going to see if I can get an idea at this Thursdays meeting of what they are thinking about for his placement for kindy so I don't have to keep having these dreams!

Yes, I would appreciate any goals you can provide! As for the relaxing I am going to use my gift cert to get a massage tomorrow. Ahhhh... Perfect timing huh!

My dh will attend and we won't sign anything that day. I will rush home and fax a copy to our clinical psychologist who dx Liam. She said she will be happy to look it over. I'm trying really hard to get Liam back into receiving Regional Center services (they dropped him at age 3). They will provide an ed consultant and I so hope we can get that by April. Thanks so much.

Molly,

The whole transition IEP process here in the NCCSE is pretty screwy sometimes. You meeting on Thursday should go well. THey may offer more services if he is a child with autism now. You have a autism specialist type person in your district who is also a mom of an ASD guy who is pretty good (but very busy I hear).

Then in April he will have his annual IEP but they likely won't do a full retesting then. They only do that every 3 years. They may do some quick evals and then maybe anything where there may be a new concern but typically not alot of tests.

There is often a separate "transition" meeting involving the folks from the current school, the proposed placement and the parents. THis is typically a quickie formality as most of the decision making is done previously. Often in fact a preschool program will have a transition meeting day where they have set up with the staff from the next placement and all the kids that are going to that placement will have thier transition plan that day.

Placement most likely will be discussed at his April IEP but I would bring it up at this one anyway to get the conversation started. Ask for a chance to visit proposed placements in advance and make sure to get to know the players.

Will be thinking of and praying for you. We are in the same predicament now and are currently looking at placements for next year, have a meeting in 2 weeks on Assitive Tech to add that and then a transition plan sometime soon.

LOL. I know! It was when we were transitioning Kyle from 5th grade to middle school. His 5th grade team was there 8 people (some didn't show) and then some of the new 6th grade team, 8 people. So 16 total. Then the next one was all of the MS teachers and some support staff, about 17 total. So I actally haven't broke 20 but I'm getting close, lol. I'm kind of starting to get used to it since the last 3 have been big.

Molly,

Are you still looking for "sample" goals?

Ds is in 1st grade, and we just had an IEP meeting this AM, so I had the folder with his IEPs out (Actually, it's folders now, lol, by the time he gets to high school, he'll have his own filing cabinet!). These are his kindy goals, they have been modifed slightly now.

This is just the social/behavior ones, in case you're still interested (he also had speech ones)

Ryan will...

independently engage in verbal exchanges with peers and adults by making eye contact when speaking - 90% of the time over 6 consecutive weeks

independently demonstrate reciprocal interactions(sharing, turn taking, exchanging items) during play activities with peers and adults - 90% of the time over 6 consecutive weeks

independently transition from one activity to another activity(even when activity order id is changed) daily at school - 90% of the time over 6 consecutive weeks

express his feelings to peers and adults during times when he is upset to communicate his needs - 90% of the time over 6 consecutive weeks

I also have the program mods handy...

Renee,

Thank you so much for putting that all into perspective for me! With Early Start they really prepared you about the transition to IEP but with this next transition I have heard nothing.

I will ask about the placement and if I can go see it.

I know you are going through a huge transition too and I am thinking and praying for you also, hugs.
