IEP Thurs to change to autism box

We called an IEP meeting since receiving our dx last month. We are changing Liam from the "other health impaired" to the "autism" category. The teacher wants to set up behavioral goals and social goals for him too.

Our annual IEP will be in April. That will be the one for kindegarten. I guess they will do some retesting before that one.

Does anyone know what behavioral and social goals look like? I have no idea what to expect.

Last night I had a dream that we were at our IEP. The table of people sitting around it was extremely large and retangular. About 25 people were there. I was wondering "who are all these people and why are they at our IEP?" lol!! I guess I am a little queasy and nervous!!!

Thanks Kate, I am adding those to my list, very helpful. I do not understand what a program modification is. Is that something they use in elementary school?

They will retest his speech(has not ever needed speech) because the pysch noted that he has early warning signs of pragmatic speech weakness. So if you have goals and don't mind posting, it may help too.

Program mods are the things they do differently for Ryan in the classroom and in school.

For example, in kindy they were.. (condensed version)

picture schedule, clear work area, use of social stories, repeating and rephrasing of directions, use of communication notebook between parents, teachers, therapists. Also some sensory mods such as.. use of heavy work prior to sit down work, use of vestibular movement to help him be alert or calm, stuff like that. We did have adaptive PE in there but lost it last year.

Can't help with pragmatic speech goals, his goals are more about articulation, use of /k,g/ sounds, /l/ and /l/ blends. Now those were/are his goals, but his ST does work alot on pragmatic stuff with him, even if isn't outlined in the IEP.

Just a comment on therapists(ST, OT, PT).. we've had quite a few since we first got involved with IEPs. JMO, but some toe the line..follow exactly the goal in the IEP, no more, no less. Some take a step back and say.. what can I do to help this kid? They work on goals.. but other things that will help. Ryan has his speech in a group, 3 kids, and they all have articulation problems, but his ST does alot of pragmatic stuff, which is helping. I guess it's just like any job, some people do the minimum, others go over and above. You just hope you get the latter for your kid.

Sorry this was so long. We had a good IEP meeting today..and I'm in an good mood. Good luck with yours!
