IEP today.

Cait's annual is today. I am stressing a bit. I wish I had an answer for what to do. They came up with 4 pretty lame objectives. I emailed the teacher and we have adjusted them some and added 1 or 2 more. May add more today.

Once again, it feels like a practice of futility. She not doing well academically and they are blaming it all on her not following through on her homework at home. It is BS. It is totally a lack of organizational skills. The only objective they had on this was that she would follow her planner to complete her homework. i got them to agree to change that one but it hasn't been done yet.

They also had eye contact as part of another objective. I have a problem with this. Cait knows cognitively about eye contact, etc but she physically cannot do it. It i too overwhelming for her. I want it out, they want it in. We are coming to an impasse over flipping eye contact.

Finally, I gotta start making plans for HS. I don't want her in this kind of program again. there is a magnet fine arts HS openning and I want her to go there. It will be much smaller than our other HS and she is great in the arts. I think a good resource specialist in that kind of school can do as well or better than what is going on now.

There is one high point in this. I talked to Cait about what she wanted and we agreed she wanted more friends, particularly after school. She has an objective for this (how to call, make arrangements and do things with other students outside school). I hope they have some decent ideas for how to implement this. It is a great objective but I am not too hopeful they will be able to implement.

i also want a plan to fade out her aide. I didn't get a response on that yet though. It is a priority for me. She doesn't want someone following her around in HS.

Wish me luck.

Renee,

First: Print out your DH's e-mail rant about h/work AND the senior district person's response and insist they put a copy in her file.

Put your foot down hard about the eye-contact thing and threaten due process if you need to.

Renee,
Good luck with the IEP. I hope you can get the smaller HS and fade out aide. You know your child best so they better listen!

I've never understood what the big deal is about eye contact.

Renee~

I know I'm chiming in way late here...sorry...but I hope you didn't back down on the eye contact issue. It's a load of carp and anybody with half a clue knows it. It's the catch all "added objective" that numbskulls throw into IEP's to make people THINK they know something about spectrum kids. Our Noah is just like Cait. He knows he's supposed to make eye contact, but it actually hurts him to do so!

The arts HS sounds perfect! I'm sure if that's where she belongs, you'll make it happen.

Hang in there!
