IEP went well

I had Nathan's IEP this morning. It was scheduled for a half hour....but it lasted for and hour and a half! He's been doing well with his reading, and has also improved with his patience, frustration, and anxiety. He's getting better at raising his hand when he needs help and being patient with this. His heavy breathing (due to anxiety) is even diminishing too.
They have made a few changes for him recently too. He's been doing more "with" the class, as far as academically. Not so much 1:1 help. I was real concerned about his classroom work, because it looked like he was checking out alot and not understanding directions. But they explained to me what had been taking place, and that this was work that he JUST started doing "with" the class as a whole. They want to see if he's able to do the work without help, because he seems to use the help as a crutch.
I do agreee that he does use the help....even when he doesn't need it. So I don't want him relying on this if he doesn't need it. I did let them know ....very strongly, that I was still concerned and that I would be continuing to watch his work that comes home. His teacher also said that she will be watching as well. So, I may have to continue this little rough patch for a bit....til Nathan gets adjusted to the new way of doing things in class.
He also just started taking his spelling tests with the class too. He used to do the test 1:1 with his aid. So, of course, this has added more stress too.
After talking with everyone, I see what Nathan is doing now. He has replaced the heavy breathing with spacing off (his way of coping with the stress). So, I'm going to wait and watch....and see how it goes.
I wish the school was just better with the communication. If I had known everything beforehand....then I would be able to understand the stress he's been under. Unfortunately, this "communication" seems to be an ongoing thing at this school!!
At least everything went ok! OH! AND we even discussed giving him a buddy from his classroom....so that will be nice for him too!!!

I am glad it all went well for you!

Tina,
We do have a communication book...but not using it this year. It was mostly for behaviorial type things, and Nathan is doing well with that this year. As far as info regarding his schoolwork and routine, I have no idea why they don't tell me. I think they just assume that Nathan will say something. Even though I have told them repeatedly that he DOES NOT do this. I only get bits and pieces from Nathan. I believe they have about 27 kids in the class. I know that seems scary....but Nathan does do well. I think because each year there has been a slow increase in the amount of kids. This year he's there all day, so it's not surprising that he's stressed alot at home. I've watched him in class, and have also gone to his music performances.....and he does really well.
I also discussed how his behavior is at home, and how different he is at school. They are always surprised at what I tell them. He behaves real well at school, so they were under the assumption that he's been doing fine. Even though....when he's home, he lets everything out. All his frustrations are taken out at home!
I'm glad that he's doing well. But these changes are always challenging.

Glad to hear the IEP went well, and that Nathan is doing so well!
I have the same problems with communication with the school, it's sketchy at best and they rely too much on Ryan to tell me stuff.
I like that buddy idea.. Ryan has really been withdrawing during recess and maybe this would be a good idea for him.
