Okay I just got Victor's progess reports. Why do I not hear anything about him not turning in assignments until 4 weeks have already passed. I understand that he's mainstreamed, but I need to know what's going on with my kid. WHY, is his agenda a nightmarish mess and the teachers are not picking up on the fact that he's not filling it out correctly and correcting it. I never know what is homework and what is school work. How is he supposed to be organized if he cannot get his own agenda straight enough to know what is homework and what is school work? If I can't tell the difference, how is the aide that helps him pack supposed to know what needs to come home? He can't. There is a breakdown in what is supposed to be happening in school and they need to fix it starting tomorrow. I've got a call into the spec ed teacher and I swear to friggin god, if she does not call me back TODAY, I will be up at that school tomorrow at 8:00 ( Bry doesn't get on the bus til then) and heads will roll. It was one thing when it was just hime forgetting his chapter book at home, but when I noticed that 3 homework assignments have not been turned in, I started looking at how he wrote out his agenda. I informed the spec. ed teacher that his agenda would be a source of problems for us and she needed to stay on top of it. I guess now I have to make certain that every teacher looks to see that he's written CW for class work and written that correctly and HW for homework to see that he's written that correctly. This problem will be fixed TOMORROW. I've had it. I cannot see how punishing this kid for being a disorganized mess is going to do him any good when they are not staying on top of him to make certain he is doing what is needed to stay organized.

Okay feeling better now that I have vented... but still, heads will roll.

Hi there that must be very frustrating. What grade is your ds in?I don't blame you I would go up there and talk to the teacher. That is strange that he isn't sure which is class work and homework.Does your son have an iep? Also I would make it clear to the teacher that you want to know when he is not turning in work. Her not telling you is crazy. Its a good thing your school has progress reports. Also what does his aide do?Can they not help him with organization at school.Gl tomorrow at the school. Dawn

Alexis,

It sounds like you need more reassurances in writing (i.e. on the IEP) that they will communicate with you more frequently than monthly.

New to this board but have a possible solution to your situation. I am a sped teacher who also has a child who is DX AU. I have had several AU students over the last 10 years and yes, organization is an issue. We too use planners to write in assignments and communicate with parents but with handwriting sometimes being an issue with AU students this is not always helpful. I have in the past used a homework graph/table that is completed each Mon. after consulting with reg. ed. teachers re: the upcoming week's homework. Each night the homework is completed, the HW table is signed by the parent indicating he/she has seen the assignments and they have been attempted/completed. At the same time, we ask the student to keep using the planner to write his/her assignments or any last minute additions. (i.e incomplete class work) This method has worked well with 5th and 6th grade to the point where they wean themselves off the need for the homework table and just use the planner. In the long run it provides the student with a template of what should be written in his planner. This would also help the T.A. know exactly what to pack for your student at the end of the day.

Bottom line, the sped teacher and educational faculty are there to help you and your student succeed. If you feel the mods in your child's IEP are not sufficient, you always have the right to call and ARD/IEP meeting to review and brainstorm what would work better. If you have tried something @ home that works, then try suggesting it.

Hope this helps.
