Until recently when someone here corrected me, I thought I had to have formal testing completed before the schools would provide accommodations for my ds. I finally remembered to call the school today to see what kind of accommodations we could get. The principal answered the phone herself. I explained the problem. She said we'd just explain the situation to next year's teachers and everything would be fine. When I mentioned ds last year's teacher, the principal said the teacher was standing right there, she'd already contacted his upcoming teacher, and everyone's set to make ds year a good one! Wow! Fortunately ds doesn't have academic challenges and tends to be a sympathetic figure (behaves well, doesn't have any friends, looks sad), so last year's teacher loved him and has been a great advocate for us. The biggest problem with ds at school is sometimes he has a hard time getting his brain organized and focusing on his work. One day he'll get all of his work done, and another day he can't even figure out how to get his name on his paper. To an unsuspecting teacher, it just looks like he's wasting time and not cooperating. Last year's teacher recognized that ds knew the work but sometimes had a hard time organizing thoughts. So, during tests, she'd only grade him on the work he completed rather than expecting him to complete the entire test every time.
I just can't believe how easy this has been so far. No formal meetings. No fighting to make sure my kids gets help. I just say "can I have this?" and I get it. I'm sure it helps that last year's teacher has been such a great advocate for us. It's so nice to have ONE area where everything works right!

Yea!! Isn't it lovely when things aren't always a fight.
