Indifference to school work

Is your child indifferent about school work.  My 12 year old son, in 6th grade, does not like math for one thing, but also is indifferent or just doesn't care what kind of grades he gets.  It does not seem to bother him at all to get a low or even failing grade on a paper.  Any ways to inspire or motivate?

Hi & welcome.  I'm trying to think of a way to motivate him, the only thing I can come up with right now is a reward system.

He earns points (stickers, stars ect) for doing the work, to a certain level. He then can can redeam them for something he wants.

Some people are able to do long term rewards - 50 points for a new book / trip someplace / movie

others need short term things, 5 points = 10 minutes of video games, special treat ect

If I think of anything else I'll let you know
