Interesting memoir of mom w/ AS kid

I just found this. It's very short, so you can read it in a few minutes. It's a morning in the life of a mom and her 7-year-old son, who, at that point, had not yet been diagnosed with Asperger's. This story is the closest thing I've ever come across to what we used to go through on a daily basis when our son was about five. I'd be interested to hear if other people think this sounds familiar.

2 things really help my kids with morning routines. First is thier evening checklist and next is thier morning checklist. We literally have a visual checklist posted outside the bathroom (I have posted a link with a picture here before about it). The Evening one prepares stuff for the morning as well as the usual stuff so they get thier clothes out for the next day, find thier shoes, check what's for lunch, etc. The morning is the schedule of what to do. Now if they weren't distractable and mom wasn't ADHD we wouldn't forget things like glasses but oh well.
The other thing is that when thier entire morning routine is done they may have electronics or free time until it is time for school. That is where our current problem comes in. When we drive Cait to school (special program across town so it is a good half hour of time in total) they lose that free time. That on top of too many morning transitions and having to leave at 6:45 am to bring her.
What has helped with it currently are 1) there are no electronics if he throws a fit about going, and 2) God Bless Harry Potter! Mike is obsessed by Harry Potter currently and always has a HP book with him in the car to read.

Thanks Evelyn!
I can relate even though Weston isn't quite like that child-- he was more of the "I'll sit there stone still and not do anything for an hour and be limp when you try to make me eat or put on my clothes". He was late for school so often before we had a Dx. Now things are a bit better, but still not like a "normal" family's morning! Lately, he makes me guess what he wants to eat for breakfast, then changes his mind once it's on the plate in front of him. If he doesn't have the right t-shirt in his drawer he might just refuse to get dressed. And we're having sock issues again. But at least things aren't as bad as they used to be, he didn't freak when they missed the bus this morning and we had to go to a different bus stop!

Betsy! SOCKS!!! LOL. I forgot about socks. I think we were late half the days in 3rd grade for Cait because of SOCKS!!!
Feeling a bit snarky this AM about the subject. Had to come and sit at the puter for a second to get out of Cait's range. She is in quite the mood this AM. Dad had to leave early and her sister put her shoes away for her last night. OH NO!!! Well Cait couldn't find them in the AM because they were where they were supposed to be. We are out of the yogurts she liked for breakfast.
Avoided the meltdown but she is being quite the pill anyway.
Well, time to go finish.
