hmmmm, well if you have had numerous diagnosis and confirmations on ASD and only this one on ADHD (particularly since she is not qualified to diagnose) I would likely stick with the ASD diagnosis until he is old enough to know for sure that isn't what it is.

There is lots of overlap of symptoms when they are young. Both my kids were first diagnosed with ADHD with other things. Cait was ADD, language disorder, dyspraxia and Mike was SID and auditory processing disorder. Even my classically autistic nephew was diagnosed as SID and language delayed until he was 3. He started getting evaluated at 2 and he was definite.

Even after Mike was diagnosed AS, confirmed as AS by another psychologist and believed to be AS by the school psychologist and the rest of his teachers from preschool (in hindsight after he was diagnosed. They said they had expected as much) up to 1st grade and one of the second grade teachers, the other 2nd grade teacher INSISTED he was only ADHD and constantly bugged me to put him back on medication.

My thought is that he is doing well because this classroom is a good supportive environment. I wouldn't move him without looking into it completely and getting input from all parties involved. The teachers heart maybe in the right place, but all to often HF ASD's are mistaken for ADHD and language delays at a young age. Kids with ASD's should get at least 20-25 hours of therapy a week when they are young. I would be concerned with only 12 hours a week in the DD class unless he was getting a good bit of therapy outside the DD classroom as well. Home sessions, outside OT/PT, social skills, etc.

Tina,
You must be so confused about all the different diagnosis.CHOP is great and they picked up on all the things Jake had trouble with. Your right, it takes 2 days but the first day is the hardest because thats the day they do all the testing. It takes about 5 hours on day 1. Bobby would see a ST and OT together for about an hour then they videtape him playing with a therapist. He is given a physical examination by the developmental ped and he/she will ask you a few more questions. The whole team review the videotape together and you would come back the next day for the results. They like to do a follow up appointment every 6 months after the initial eval.It cost us about $200 after what our insurance paid but it was well worth every penny.

Don't you often wish they could hook up a machine to their head for a few seconds and it would print a report? LOL I also think that report should come with it's own instructions as well hehehehe!
I know what you are going through, as we have yet to reach the "definite diagnosis". It's a real PIA, and I think you and I are in the same stages right now. We have been in EI since 18 mos, my son turned 3 in August. I just can't wait to find out HOW I need to teach him so that he can learn. Of course I would love some behavior assistance as well. I did contact the local university, where they have a speech and language dept. We will be going in for a full auditory evaluation very soon, to see what delays he has and possibly why. HOW AWESOME! I always look forward to new answers, yet DEFINITE answers are the key LOL!

Ya know, sometimes I still want to take my kids for a more full evaluation. It seems like we are never satisfied, lol. However, now it is more to get a full picture of thier strengths and needs as they change. Cait not so much, but I really feel like I have never gotten a really good full eval on Mike. Probably because he is very resistent to testing so we only do what is absolutely neccessary.

Fortunately I have been able to access some good people within the district or though our own contacts and have gotten some good evals for Cait. Mike I am very comfortable that his teacher has a good handle on him and he is learning and doing well. BUt I definitely want a full set on him prior to his going to middle school.

It is never a bad idea to get a full eval if you have not had one. BUt it is stressful trying to work through diagnostics when they are young. Fortunately, my kids are at an age where I no longer question thier diagnosis. Even if it has been obvious from younger, you always question I think for a while.
