you, my dear are EVIL! I was very concerned over you! bleh!
I'm Betsy, mom to 5 very quirky kids! w/o quirkiness life would be so boring!
Weston, age 10, my middle son and middle child is my reason for being here. His Dx is autism. We finally got this Dx when he was 8 yrs 10 months. We'd been happily going along knowing he was somewhere on the specturm for a couple of year until his IEP placement was getting less perfect for him. He's extremely bright and rather scary smart in math. He is good in the rules parts of language (has a language delay and also LOTs of difficulty w/ pragmatics) and reading. He has very few social skills (is rather robotic in his interactions w/ peers) and is very little professorish. He's in the 5th grade and doing well in mainstreamed classroom and gifted classes for LA and math. Still has pull outs for social skills, organization, speech therapy and OT. We just dropped the consult for PT as he seems to have caught up to the range of physical skills that is appropriate for his age. His teachers are getting supports from our district's autism educational specialist. His most difficult things are sensory integration and disruption to his self imposed schedule.
my others: Warren 15, Dx ADD-nos. He's almost aspie but doesn't quite fit all the criteria all the time. He has lots of issues w/ social difficulties but sometimes is just fine. He has asthma, allergies and eczema and has had LOTS of health issues relating to those chronic health issues.
Amelia 13, nt, has some sensory issues, had learning differences w/ language and reading but has overcome most of those, rather a stubborn beauty. A born leader. She's becoming very pleasant since puberty is about 1/2 over!
Martha, 7, 2nd grader, nt w/ some sensory issues. Still having lots of issues learning to read and w/ basic math understanding, but she can tell you the life cycle of plants, insects, etc. and knows what everyone is thinking before they say a word. She has ton of friends and is VERY social. My goal is to get something resolved w/ her teachers this week.
Owen, 5, ADHD and SID. The sensory issues he's had so severely are beginning to resolve and he's becoming pleasant to take out in public for short periods of time. W/ the sensory diet his ADHD symptoms are reduced as well (maybe he's not truely ADHD?!) He LOVEs to hang upside down from furniture and to stand on his head while we're waiting for siblings at their lessons (will stand on his head off and on for most of a 1/2 hour music lesson). His speech is improving lately, we were concerned because at the start of the semester he began slurring speech and refused to talk part of the time-- possibly stress from starting school and all the sensory issues he was dealing with-- ST thinks it will just resolve itself-- will reck in a few months.
I'm a sometimes ADD brained, artistic person married to a computer techie for the past 17 years. We currently live in South Carolina, but previously lived in Wisconsin and Illinois. My passions currently are decorating (working on a project right now), costume design, and sewing. Recently, I've found beading and embroidery on clothing to be interesting and my DDs don't mind wearing my handiwork either.
I'm Lainie, and have only been on this board for about a month.
I have a beautiful 19 yr old dd (Marisa) who is married to a great guy and has a beautiful child who will be 2 in March (he's my little snuggle bunny :).
She had a hard start in life, as I had a druggie ex, and he spent more time in jail than out of jail. She was dx'd with Borderline Personality Disorder at the age of 5, due to her attachment problems with him. We both went to therapy for 3 yrs, and it saved our lives. She is doing wonderfully now, is a very attentive and caring mother, and it makes me cry to think how she is now and how she could of turned out to be.
My 10 yr old is now being tested for AS and Dysgraphia. He has one more test (the NEPSY) and then hopefully he's done. He has sensory issues, extreme repetitive behaviors, extreme eating and sleeping problems, amoung others.
My youngest just turned 7 on Dec 10th, I notice with him more of a tic disorder or Tourettes. He makes lots of faces, and grimaces, more than other kids. He is very impulsive. He will also use swear words when he is impulsive. He has problems in school with impulsiveness (and I think a few times swearing, which he tells me, he is very honest lol). I think the teacher sugar coats it, as she says he has problems, but doesn't mention the swearing.... I mean he is advanced in everything and is the top dog in his class, she doesn't complain as much as my 10 yr old's teacher, who behaves well, but has shown signs in learning.....
He blinked his eyes the other night repetitivly and I said something about it, and he said mom, it makes me feel good. I said then well you need to do it. The next night he started blinking, and I counted more than 40 fast blinks in a row.....
OK, Paula, you did give my heart a little stop there. Nasty...
I'm Sara, happily married to dh Cliff, computer programmer and video game whiz, and mom to Malcolm, age 9, PDD-NOS. Our biggest problems have been with the schools of NYC, where we live on the Upper West Side. With Special Ed constantly failing and in complete disarray, we have had him in 3 different schools and the last one was a complete nightmare. Now we are homeschooling with services (OT, ST, play therapy) paid for by NYC DOE and a slew of outside activities/services out-of-pocket, esp. psychotherapy. Meanwhile, we are continuing to look at (dismal) school options.
Malcolm is a lovely boy, funny and loves other kids, has many friends and even a special girlfriend. He struggles with very high sensory issues, but has learned tons of coping skills. Malcolm rides horses, does Tae Kwondo, Little League, swims, and is very strong in academics, esp. math, reading and science. He writes music, jokes and children's books, and loves video games, his hamster and now Pokemon, his first real obsession.
I have been an actor and producer most of my adult life, but am currently teaching fitness and personal training to make the lots of money we need for this child. I have JUST started back working on the development of a musical with my creative team -- we have had to take many breaks on this project, this last break was not quite a year. We hope to have another reading of a second draft this Spring.
This board has been a great source of support for me!!!
I'm not sure where my original reply went just a few minutes ago... I'm Misty, habitual lurker, with DS Taran age 8, 3rd grade. Taran is diagnosed with Aspergers and ADHD. He is in a self-contained classroom out of district, but only 15 minutes from our house. He is mainstreamed for specials and science. He will have a new placement for 4th grade since this class is only 1st-3rd grade. He has never attended school in our district (we just moved here last year) so I think he will continue in another out of district classroom within the same co-op. He might go to the school by our house, but I'm a little worried that his friendships with the neighborhood kids might suffer when they see how he is in school.
As for me, I will be going back to school this month to start taking pre-requisites for an Occupational Therapy graduate program! I'm hoping to get in either this fall or fall 2008.
Candes in AZ, married to Craig (AS) with DDs: Corina (NTish), Ayla (AS), Sammi (ADHD-C), Jade (ASD, MLMR, TS, and more), Eva (AS), and Angel (Policy's Syndrome but NT). **counts** Yup, that's six, didn't forget any... this time.
I also sorta care of my mom. She doesn't live with us, but she's disabled and DH takes care of her property while I help her with her finances. She *does* have her own room in our house because she's here so often though, does that count?
Um, lemme see. DH is an HVAC installer, I'm a book editor and writer. We homeschool the three youngest kids. The three oldest don't live with us full time. DH is working on his contractor's licence and I'm looking forward to my first wide book release.
Hmmm, how does one describe Jade... Attitude Galore! She's possessed of all the teenage attitude with none of the teenage interests. She doesn't like hanging out with other kids, which is cool on one hand because I don't have to worry about her getting into trouble by 'going with the flow' but it's agrivating because she's always attached to my hip yet considers helping mom out with things around the house beneath her noble self. She struggles with reading and personal hygene, but she's working on it.
Eva is (IMHO) more NVLD than ASD anymore. Of course, that may change. She's very social with her peers lately, but still has a short attention span where they're concerned and still has problems with putting both feet in her mouth. She reads like the dickens but isn't quite hyperlexic. She has a terrible time with numbers and math, and has the worst sense of rhythm I've EVER seen. She's extremely uncoordinated and doesn't do well at sports, music, or walking in a straight line. Thankfully, she says she wants to be a writer when she grows up, which is good, because she tells the most wonderful stories and can relay on real events with incredibly non-biased, clear reporting. She's very good at ratting on herself when she's done something wrong... and then she realizes what she said, lol.
Angel isn't on the spectrum, but she's physically handicapped. She thinks her sisters are boring because they don't like to play games that involve taking turns unless mom or dad force them too. I'd say she's my social butterfly, but she isn't quite that shallow. She likes people, likes spending time with people, meeting new people, and really getting to know the people around her. She even greets new people with a two handed handshake, direct eye contact, and a smile that's all dimples. My FIL is betting she grows up to be a politician, lol.
Hey gang. Rina from LI, NY I am a 41yrold married for 19 years to Jon. 3 kids Josh my aspie age 12 as of Jan 19th. He is also ADHD. He likes to line up his cars. He just got his Tenderfoot from Boyscouts and 2nd class is on the horizon. He tries very hard in school but he struggles to an extent.
