For crying out loud, when will people understand that 1:1's aren't strictly intended for behavioral intervention???
Last Friday, after Claire's supershort IEP her 1:1 had to leave with a sick baby. The school had told her that they were getting a substitute. But they didn't. Of course, the classroom teacher tells me AFTER THE FACT...and says, "But she did just fine. We didn't have any problems." DOH! Thank goodness. BUT...
The child eats rocks! Yesterday she almost threw herself down a flight of stairs in the middle of a meltdown. Our DD has no since of fear, or danger...or any of those OTHER important skills...therefore...SHE CAN'T BE ALONE!
Sorry...just had to get that out of my system. I now return you to your regularly scheduled program.

UGH!
I just hate how they ignore all the non-behavioral stuff.

Hello.
I so know how you feel, however my situtation is not a safety issue! My 11 yr old ds with PDD requires an aide. Last year his aide left mid-year ( Jan.)....apparently everyone knew she was leaving to do her student teaching...but me until the day before she left. The district then took 2 wks to find her replacement. My ds had a fill in somedays and other days had none. They should have had a replacement lined up in September since another teacher told me that's when she told the school she was leaving. The aide never told me she was leaving, nor did the classroom teacher. When I asked the classroom teacher why she didn't feel it necessary to inform me so that we could prepare....she refused to accept responsibility. My ds basically sat for 2 wks without knowing what was going on!
My ds needs an aide to "help" him understand directions, read and write assignments, keep him on task and make sure his books/homework assignments are sent home. None of these things are behavioral yet very necessary. Why don't people understand there are other reasons for needing an aide? It is really frustrating.....I am with you on this one!
yup, I hate that stuff.
Cait was supposed to have a shared aide that was on HER IEP starting at the beginning of 6th grade. There are only 4 aides in the program and they have to be written in on students IEPs who need them. (damn which just reminded me why they wont let her leave the program easily). To me that means the aide should be mainly for Cait right?
Well at the beginning of 6th I threw a stink because they weren't going to even help her find her classes. This is a kid with a LONNNNNG history of wandering and getting lost at school. ANd they weren't going to monitor her in a big middle school? Hasn't gotten better. I am tired of fighting them.
