things I wish teachers would keep in mind. (please add your own)

Just because he's autistic doesn't mean he can't be the most intelligent child in your class.

Just because he's autistic doesn't mean he can't be good at taking tests.

Just because he's autistic doesn't mean you need to repeat your instructions several times in a loud voice directed at him during class.

Just because he's autistic doesn't mean you should tap him on the shoulder when he's not doing exactly what you think he should be doing it.

Just because he's autistic does mean he might not be able to interact in a group of 3 other preteens during a science lab and actually complete the lab.

Just because he's autistic does mean he'll need more time to process verbal directions.

Just because he's autistic does mean he may have difficulty understanding classroom instructions when he comes in from therapy in the middle of a class period.

Just because he's autistic he'll have good days and bad days.

Just because he's autistic he may react positively to you one day and negatively to you the next.

Just because he's autistic he may not be able to pay attention in class if there is a fly in the room.

Just because he's autistic he may not be able to read from an overhead projector to get the notes.

Just because he's autistic he might not eat lunch (which WILL affect the rest of his day) if someone sits next to him eating peanut butter (or cereal or one of 1000 other things he doesn't like to smell)OR because the lunch room was too loud OR because someone else sat in the chair he always sits in OR because someone different sat at his table.

Just because he's autistic he may not be able to pay attention if you're wearing a striped shirt while teaching today.

Just because he's autistic he may not be able to pay attention if you have a cold and sound different or sneeze more often or blow your nose when you don't normally do that during a lesson.

Just because he's autistic he might think you're laughing AT HIM when you're laughing about something that happened earlier or at a joke you just read or whatever.

Just because he's autistic he may answer you in a short, disrespectful tone, when he really didn't mean any disrespect or anything negative at all, he just doesn't regulate the tone of his voice very well.

Just because she/he's autistic....

Perfect...I agree with all of those. Except chad still really does need extra attention on directions and warnings when the class is going to transition.
