Just checking in.....

Hi all. I haven't been around in a while, just wanted to stop by and see what's new with everyone.

Sam (7, 2nd grade, AS) has been doing ok. We have good days and not so good days. Therapy is helping and he started a Social Skills Group last month that has been fun for him. He's been much more understanding of others' feelings since starting the group and reading the picture social stories at home has helped alot.

He has some days that he just doesn't want to get out of bed though. He has a hard time focusing and just seems to lose schoolwork skills we thought he had mastered. We're keeping a chart to see if we can find some patterns. We have 4 charts going now, responsibilities, relaxation practice, a skill sheet for the group, and my chart for his daily behavior observation.......sigh.....I'm pooped. DH is beat after work and usually looses track of something which makes life difficult for me since I have also been working retail at night. Sam has come to see me as the bad guy since I'm the one that does homework with him usually and gets him out of bed in the morning. He is always saying that he wishes Daddy was home. He actually told everyone at group that I "always yell." Which was devistating because I work very hard at not yelling. Of course speaking to him in a stern tone of voice counts as yelling for him, so maybe he does feel like I am yelling all the time.

He took swimming lessons during winter vacation. He didn't jump in or put his head under, but he didn't yell at everyone when he got splashed in his face...that's huge for him. I'm probably going to sign him up for the next session and am looking into Karate too. He is much easier to manage when he's kept busy on the weekends but it's tough to get him out of the house unless it's a special outing like the zoo or Chuck E Cheese.

I'm starting to seriously look for a job during the day since me not being around at night makes for a cranky Sam in the morning. DH tries, but he really can't keep it together to get all of the reading, relaxation practice...etc done and get Sam to bed before 830pm while trying to wrestle with the 2 year old by himself. We've cut screen time down to half an hour after homework because there's just too much to do.

Wish me good luck on my job search!
