Just had our emergency IEP

Actually it was mostly positive. I'm still not overly impressed with the teacher but I'm hopeful that she got some useful information today. She had been emailing me almost every day with complaints about DS and trying to treat him as any other 1st grader because he's smart. But today we discussed his sensory issues and inability to understand social situations and respond appropriately. She had told me that she hadn't "had" to use any of his accomodations yet and I asked her about that. She said that she thought I meant the testing accomodations not the regular classroom accomodations. I'm sure that was face-saving on her part. I don't think she had even read his IEP at our first meeting. She said that the classroom accomodations he has are ones she basically uses on all her students. I said so basically you're not differentiating between DS and the other NT students? And she said that "of course" she was making sure she applied them especially to DS. Whatever.

But the other team members who have been with DS for a while now were helpful in explaining his special needs and issues. So maybe now she realizes that DS is not just another student who chooses to be "bad" but has bonafide sensory, social and learning issues. She still seemed a bit defensive at the end but maybe it was my imagination. I don't care as long as she makes the effort to help my son appropriately.

We decided on more resource room time and times

Jackie,

Fingers crossed that schools will be a little easier for him now with a new perspective.

Dear Jackie,

Huge slip on part of person who told you there would be no more services if dx'ed changes to with autism or after re-evaled, they cannot decide that in advance of doing the eval. Services must be decided based on the particular needs of each Individual child in order to be successful and by saying that in advance of further testing, they are out of compliance. Now I KNOW sd's just hand out services same old same old no matter what, but actualy that is illegal, and saying that is against the law IDEA. Sorta thing you should have a tape recorder for. Ooooops.

Check with Steph and the gals at Special Education Plans board on all this, BTW. They not only have to follow his IEP, if the plan is not working, they have to re-tool it and even (YES) add services and more accomodations until the plan works. Only after every effort has been made to keep him in Least Restrictive Environment will there need to reconsider placement. Some sd's don't seem to understand this.

yours,
Sara
