Just a little update

Well, yesterday our local autism society had their first get together for moms, kids, and siblings. Hardly no one showed. So...that was kinda disappointing. I was hoping to meet some other kids and possibly some other siblings for Tyler too. But that didn't happen. We stayed for an hour and played some games then we left to run some errands. We had to go to the mall, but I had already prepared Nathan, and told him what we were going to do.

He had a real hard time all day yesterday. When we went to the mall, he even panicked on the escalator!!! He LOVES the escalator!! But not yesterday. He managed to ride on it ok, but Tyler and I had to keep reassuring him that he wasn't going to fall. When we got home, he went to the couch....grabbed a little toy in his hand and hung head over the arm of the chair, so his head was upsidedown. He seemed so relieved to be home.

But, later....he started up again. The rest of the day was filled with tantrums and crying. So far, today he's doing ok. My plan is to stay home today...and see how he does. It was nice outside yesterday, and nice again today. I'd really like to take them outside, maybe to the park. But we'll see how he does.

He's been doing great at school. But seems to still be having some difficulties at home. Perhaps its the spring air? I don't know...... I've been encouraging more jumping on the trampoline, so he's been doing that. It seems to help. Just now I went to rock with him in his rocking chair. He was so worked up (Tyler is playing on playstation!), he was twitching and jerking!! We rocked for quite a bit, and he finally calmed down. So far..so good! lol

And as luck would have it....he has his routine dental appt this week, and we also have the Autism Fair this coming Saturday. Let's hope it's a good week!!!

Michelle, it sounds like you live at my house ;)

Good for you, you've figured out some of his "tricks" for calming down.

Michelle,

I hope things start to go better for you. It sounds like Nathan is really having a tough time of it. I wonder, is he stressed from school do you think and holding it in there? It seems as his year goes on he is having more and more difficulty. Nothing severe to make a huge immediate change but enough that overall he is just having a rough go of it.

Cait's 3rd and 5th grades were like that. 3rd grade the teacher was a turd and about this time of year things went down hill fast and I homeschooled the end of the year, but in 5th grade the teacher worked so hard to try to understand and help Cait that we were able to make it through the year.

Thier stress can really come out at home. Poor dude. Poor Mom.

Debbie..actually we do have a mini trampoline...we're on our 3rd one!!! He broke/wore down the other 2!! We did spend some money and bought a huge one for the backyard, last year. But the winds here are really powerful....and one day, we found our trampoline down the street wrapped around a pole!! lol We're still thinking about whether or not to buy a new one!! We see lots of trampolines around...but for some reason the wind decided to ONLY take OURS!! lol The trampoline REALLY helps Nathan too, sometimes he forgets he has the trampoline and starts jumping on the floor! We always have to tell him to go to the trampoline.

Renee....It does feel as though Nathan is having a rougher time. He's been extremely stuck to his routines, more than usual. We had gotten to the point where we could change his routine without him getting upset. But not so much anymore. He's still doing fine in school though. I'm not sure what's going on...but there's only 1 1/2 months of school left!!! And I'm trying to make him jump more, and also rock more too. He used to just need stimulation every once in awhile, but now he seems to need it more consistantly. So, now I have to get used to implementing that into the daily schedule!!! I have to admit, I had gotten so used to our routine, and now HE'S SWITCHING it on me!!! lol

Yesterday, I did rock with him in the morning. And I continued a steady rock for quite awhile....til he seemed really calm, then we stopped. And now, looking back to yesterday...he did do alot better. He was much calmer, and not so worked up. We also stayed home all day, because I knew that would also help him. I may have to do more rocking when he gets home from school....but we'll see.

Michelle,
It must be something in the air!! Jake is acting out of sorts too and very stressed although that could have something to do with the move and school starting for him. I don't know about Nathan but Jake goes through weeks when he's doing really well and then weeks when he falls apart again. It's really tough and sometimes I feel like I'm running out of things to do with him to get him back on track.Well, I'm hoping now the weather is getting better and he'll be outside more so he'll calm down a little and be less stressed. I can only hope!
