Karate fun with ASD kids

Ok, had to share our fun karate night from yesterday.

It was sparring night which is usually great fun (sarcasm). Mike just does not handle the sparring well but seems to be getting some better over time. Last night the boys were just SOOO off.

Mike was doing the full body stim and finally sensei looked over concerned and said, "Mike are you having a fit or something?". He was making his noises too and just being off. Then the sensei wanted Mike to spar with some upper belt girls who were bigger than him. He took a couple punches and sat down refusing to spar anymore. Sensei had him take off his gear and told him he wouldn't be allowed to spar anymore that night (Which was FINE with Mike).

I thought he was scared of the girls but he has taken on some big guys. My friend brought up he may have not wanted to spar with girls becuase it breaks the rules. Either way, he would not even answer the sensei, just went and sat down and refused to interact or show any response. His new thing lately. Fun.

Then there was Dave. Mr. Dave was SOOOOOOOOO hyper that I was getting comments from other moms. You know the ones, "wow, he never stops does he?" "You must be tired at the end of the day", etc. I think they were fishing to see if there was "something" up with him but I didn't really feel like going to the 'Actually he has sensory issues, yes he meets the criteria for ADHD, no we don't use meds," place. Anything remotely close to admitting to ADHD is like oppening up yourself to a monster debate on over diagnosis and medication issues. It is easier to admit autism I think.

At any rate, they both stuck out like sore thumbs as different last night and difficult. It isn't embarrassing anymore, just darn TIRING! Plus DH was teaching last night so I had to come home after and try to do everything myself and I was bushed.
