Michelle, I wanted to send you an email thru your profile, but it said you didn't accept them.
I'm Amy in central Illinois, former SAHM who is now working as a 1:1 for a first grader with autism.
I'm Helen, 38yr old single Mum of 2
reading comprehension is frequently lower in children with autism spectrum disorders. It is very common for a child with autism to be able to decode (the visual part of reading, ie being able to read the words) and even spell well above their ability to comprehend the material especially as they get toward the upper elementary grades. Comprehension has a lot to do with language and language processing. Even if the language is in print it requires inferencing, understanding perspective, etc. These are often areas of need for kids with autism thus their comprehension is usually lower.
Also, though it is common for people with autism to be visual learners it is not a definite. That is a common misunderstanding. There are autistics who are auditory learners, kinesthetic learners, etc. Some kids will be able to learn sequences to music but not visually. Some are great with language but rotten with using it socially. Some have significant vision processing problems. It definitely is a wide variety of folk.

I am Renee in So Cal. Married to John for 16 years and we have 4 kids.
My oldest 2 (11yo and 13yo) are both ASD and my oldest, Cait, also has epilepsy.
Cait is in a full inclusion special day class program in 8th grade. She is included for all academics with supports (aide there with 3 program kids and she goes to the support class 1-2 periods a day, etc). She is doing pretty well this year and has a B average currently.
Mike is 11 and in 6th grade in a non-public school for kids with special needs. He is very very bright but gets very anxious in busy environments (like middle schools with 1500 kids) and as has a hard time with behavior problems in those situations.
Emily (9 NT) is a doll but that old ugly LD thing is starting to rear its head again. I think this might be the year, but I am not sure. She was briefly tested in 1st grade (mostly privately) got some special tutoring in school and some vision therapy activities at home and that helped. She is also in GATE but likes to flirt with that LD thing alot. She is a fabulous NT sister stuck in the middle
Dave (7 -and....) well he had been diagnosed with stuff since we started early on evals for him when there were concerns. He has had everything from ADHD to PDD-NOS to possibly epilepsy or mood disorder, etc. The only thing we are SURE of is Sensory Integration Disorder. He has had an IEP on and off since 3 mostly for speech and we are about to graduate him again. He is a very gifted young man and has learned fabulous skills so he is doing well in school. He is not medicated because that is when he had his seizures. Lately he is definitely fitting the ADHD bill and flirting with AS again. He likes to keep me on my toes.
Me, I am a preschool special education teacher. My class is an integrated preschool for children with autism. My husband is an autism specialist and yes, we both started in the field before the kids were born. I did take a 9 year hiatus to be mom though and only recently returned.
I am also in school to recieve my instate credentials and just make myself crazy.

Thanks Lainie and Renee, the reading thing makes more sense now!

Hi all,
I'm Deirdre (Dee), and like Paula originally from Ireland but living in the States for the last 9 years. Dh is JT, and he's from "Loooong Oiland" :)
I have two boys and a girl. My oldest Liam (7) is hfa/mood disorder-nos/adhd. He's in a self contained class for now, supposedly working towrad inclusion. (Note the sarcasm in supposedly)
Cian (4) is dx with developmental delays for now. Miainly vocal articulation, potty training and some quirks. I think he's a hf aspie, but still have to track down the psych with the results of testing,,,,grrrrrr
Roan (9months) is my total socialite already. As far as I can see she's perfectly NT (but then we thought that of Cian at this age too, lol)
Welcome to all newbies and hi to the oldies;)

My name is Charu and my son Jaiden (2 1/2) has not been diagnosed but shows possible signs of HFA/ Aspergers. My daughter is 3 months.
We are trying to do whatever we can to help Jaiden out now to give him a headstart. Its such an emotional rollar coaster and its easy to become consumed with all of it! My DH hates this topic and won't discuss it with me.
Thanks for the support
Charu
I am Kara, 37 years old.
