The New York City Department of Education is seeking assistant teachers/interns for a pilot kindergarten program for higher functioning children with autism.
Candidates for these positions must have:
o Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts or sciences and a GPA of at least 3.0;
o Willingness to pursue a master’s degree in Early Childhood Special Education at Hunter College, starting in June 2007;
o Willingness to attend weekly 90-minute team meetings after school;
o Ability to work well with supervisors and colleagues in a highly collaborative setting; and
o Experience working with young children is a plus; enjoyment of being with children is a must!

Candidates for these teaching positions must have an early childhood special education certificate, two years’ teaching experience (at least one year teaching young children with autism spectrum disorders) and training or experience in positive behavior supports. Candidates must have good organizational skills, knowledge of curriculum and the ability to make learning enjoyable for young children. Candidates must be able to guide assistant teachers and to work well with all team members. All staff take graduate courses at Hunter College in June, July and January and participate in a fall seminar series. Weekly 90-minute team meetings (after school) are an essential component of the program.

Seeking early childhood special educators for
new inclusion program for higher functioning children on the autism spectrum
The New York City Department of Education is expanding its ASD Nest Program to four new elementary sites and is seeking early childhood special educators for these sites (kindergarten) as well as to fill expansion positions at seven existing sites (kindergarten through grade two).
The ASD Nest Program is the Department’s inclusion program for higher functioning children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or Asperger’s Syndrome. Nestled within -- and completely integrated into -- supportive neighborhood schools, the ASD Nest program helps children with an ASD learn to function well academically, behaviorally and socially in school and their community.
Two Collaborative Team Teaching kindergartens each serve four children with an ASD and eight typically developing children. First through third grade CTT classes serve four children with an ASD and twelve typically developing children. In addition to the standard academic curriculum, specialized curricula and instructional strategies to foster relationship development, adaptive skills, language and communication development and sensory/motor development are infused throughout the day.
Candidates for these teaching positions would ideally have an early childhood special education certificate and must be particularly interested in working with young children with Asperger’s Syndrome. Knowledge of the NYC Department of Education curriculum and a minimum of two years’ classroom teaching experience is preferred, although we will consider outstanding candidates with less experience. Candidates must be: kind and loving; flexible and reflective; open to learning new things; organized; interested in working in a truly collaborative program with a transdisciplinary approach to service provision; and willing to participate in weekly 90-minute team meetings.
All staff participate in a 6-credit graduate training program at Hunter College in June and July, a three-day workshop/phase-in period in late August and a 1-credit course in January. Interested candidates should send their resume to:

Sadly, too little too late for MY son. They are starting with K and then letting them get older. No older classes starting at all anywhere. And let's be clear. They are starting, like, 2 classes of 8 for the entire NYC...

Hey Sarah.. I agree NYC is a big place and i don't think people realize how big.
And it is sad that Malcolm will be the one to miss out.
But for what it is worth it is a start. I am not sure what the goal is in the end and how far this will be expanded if it does work out. But sign up for Pat's emails, Sarah. She sends out lots of interesting articles and info about upcoming lectures and seminars between LI and the city. It may e very helpful for you.
