LOVED the New Doc!!!

The new doctor was incredible! I absolutely adored him. He was kind, compassionate, thorough...and appreciated the fact that I wasn't the kind of parent who sits on their hands and waits for the doctor to do all the work and dictate the child's treatment. The coolest part- his family is moving here from Hawaii. (Not sure how well they'll take the climate change!)

He agreed with our bipolar concerns and is confident that the first step in helping Claire is addressing the rapid cycling mood swings. So, we're going to try Trileptal and I'm very comfortable with that.

The best part is that he took all five of us into the office and addressed Emma as real part of our family, rather than just the "NT child" who didn't need any attention.

Wow...it feels so good to finally have it go "right" for our family.

Amy that is so wonderful. I am glad to hear you are getting some closure with your DD concerns.
If you saw my post below, Adam doesn't offically have ADHD but symptoms via his PDD and we are now on Adderall xr.

So it's out 2nd day in and it's too soon to tell but like you it's a step forward trying to help our kids.

Miss ya girl............

Hang in

Wow Amy!!!!!

What a fabulous experience. Trileptal is a good starter mood stabilizer; low side effects and it did work for Liam at first; I'm geinning to this our first pdoc was just very conservative with dosing. Yippeeee for you and everyone.

Nora- Not sure that I mentioned this before, but our Noah did really well on Adderall XR for quite a while. We finally had to change his medicine because he started pulling out his hair...but I think that was as a matter of anxiety, not the medicine...so we opted for a different med in the same class. Just wanted you to know that there are some kids who do great on it! (Oh, and I miss you too!)

Dee- One of the best things about this doctor was that his take on Claire wasn't just "well she has autism and there's not much you can do for autism." He feels that we have to overcome each comorbid issue/struggle individually first, so that theraputic interventions (OT, PT, etc.) will have the best opportunity for success. "In order" he wants to tackle the bipolar first, the OCD second and then the attention issue. (We all agree that a lot of her attention issues are caused by the bipolar and OCD and not just a part of "her autism".) More than anything, he gave us hope...without being unrealistic. We know we've got a lot of hurdles in front of us, because of her limited processing and reasoning abilities, but he didn't just shrug his shoulders. He made us feel like partners.

He was also kind of cute because he started to mark bipolar as her primary Dx and DH explained that he'd get paid a lot better if he marked the autism code. The doctor laughed and said, "You'll soon figure out that I'm all about the kids and pretty weak with the business end of things, so thanks for the tip, Dad!" (It was both comforting and sad to see the word bipolar on that paper. No doubt you KWIM.)
