Lately I have been thinking that in many ways we have arrived. Sure the kids are still ASD but we really have arrived. Today was one of those days.
Today is Palm Sunday. My 2 oldest kids (the asd ones) were asked by the youth group leader to help in church. They and 6 peers were part of the procession and held palms while the procession went through then they handed out palms to all the parishoners. Sounds really small but it was ohhhh so huge.
It wasn't that many years ago that Mike wore headphones to church every sunday and would sit criss cross in his chair with his head down, earphones in, music playing and hands over his ears just to be able to be there. NOW there they were, part of the mass, in the procession, doing a job and looking like teens.
Yep, I cried and looked like a COMPLETE idiot.
Mike wants to be an alter server. I think he may be ready. Amy, I know you can appreciate that.

After a week of full on pity party at my house, your story is just what I needed to read!
Oh Renee hon {{{{{HUGS}}}}}. In the year that I've known you, Mike's story has been an inspiration to me to get me thru some of the darker times and get Victor to the point he's at now. Because I knew what was out there, I knew what to fight for.
I'm so thrilled that Mike wants to be in the service.....that is a HUGE milestone. You should be proud.
((((RENEE))))
That is HUGE! I have tears in my eyes just reading it. You should be so proud.
In our Church the 6th grade students go through confirmation class and then on Pentecost they are confirmed. Weston is in the confirmation class now. Will he be able to handle the ceremony? only God knows! He very much understands what he's learning, he has the faith of a child and the understanding of someone much much older. (a friends says "special kids just have a direct link to God") He's doing a little better in church, standing when he needs to stand, occasionally singing a hymn and usually reciting the apostles creed and the Lord's Prayer. He only crumples, stims or hides in his jacket occasionally now.
Thanks for the update, Renee, it gives me lots of hope!

Renee, Thank you for sharing your lovely moment.
Awww Renee!
Thanks Guys! Oh man, the thought of confirmation brings me back to first communion. THAT was awful! Fortunately confirmation here is in high school so I have a while yet. Occasionally he still has his days in church where he hides in his jacket too and stims.
I understand what you mean by special needs children having a direct link to god. Mike and Cait are the exact same way. The innocence of a total belief.
Yesterday in church was one of those days where Mike made about a million comments on normal conversation level about the readings. The boy does NOT get the concept of WHISPER! But how can you be mad at him when his comments are usually innocent comments or questions about the readings. Like the "MOM, you never told me Judas HUNG himself. That is sad! All he had to do was ask God to forgive him". How sweet! All the folks around us must have thought I was the luckiest mom in the world with a very faithful son. HEHEHEEH. They are right, they just don't know a lot of it comes from autism.
Renee,
I'm so happy for you all.
Renee,
What a hopefilled story. Thank you for sharing it and your pride with us.
