Just a quick update, Malcolm is at new school as of today. The last week at his ASD school was much harder than he thought it was going to be, I think he was very surprised to find out how upset all the kids were and staff and teachers as well. He almost didn't want to leave by end of his last week...
Actually, this past weekend he had wonderful transition weekend --- Tae Kwondo with his 2 bestest buddies and they are really working on sparring now, so that was cool. Another best buddy from ASD school had a way cool birthday party, a reptile rescue guy brought snakes, tortoises, lizards and a small crocodile to the kid's house in cages, talk about a RAPT (and knowledgable) audience (although if that reptile rescue guy wasn't one of our kids grownup, I'll eat my hat).
Horseback riding on Sunday he got a new feistier horse, rode him like a pro, then 2 ASD school buddies came over to our place and met one of his new classmates for an all afternoon playdate.
He is clearly anxious, all his "worry-beading" activities, using lots of repetitive speaking, pretending that the school change is just temporary, but really not out of control at all. I am so proud of him that he is using it all to REALLY express his fear, sadness at leaving friends behind, anxiety that this classroom could turn out to be bad, nervous, NORMAL stuff. And I gather that he is just worry-beading with us, and actually really participating in school today, according to new teacher's note.
I am more and more convinced that this was exactly the right thing to do, wow, that only took me four and change months of questioning, hovering, watching, waking up all nite, wearing everyone's eardrums out...
Whew!@#*^$#@!^*)!!!!!

I'm so glad it went well! I'm also glad to know that a mother's intuition was right in this case! Yay! hope it continues to go well!
oh, and ROFLOL! to the reptile rescue guy! I can totally see my oldest in that kind of role!

Sounds like it went well Sara. Glad to hear it. It is going to be a great move in the long run. Sounds like you did great preparing him. When we change Mike's school in the future you know who I will be asking for advice.
