Well, what a bizarre day it's been! The meeting with the team went....well...I think.
I did get a hold of the advocate last night and she gave me some clever ways to articulate what we wanted for Liam next year.
Our chief concerns are:
Liam in a sc room, is hf and surrounded by non-verbals.
His not being given enough inclusion chances.
His current spec ed teacher not getting it and being flat out lazy.
Fear of Liam being back in this situation again next year, losing precious time, learning and generally being warehoused.
What we asked for:
that what would normally be his home school would find/create an appropriate program for Liam and thus those out there also in a similar predicament.
What we got:
The home school is NOT expanding its spec ed programs.....grrrr......but...
The current K-3 class he is in is actually being physically moved to a school closer to our house (not the home school, but a school that will move 1000 of its students to a new building, thus there will only be 500 students total next year, yippeee!)
The LAZY A$$ teacher is moving to another district ....yippee!
The principal at the new school is awesome with working with spec ed students to get more inclusion time.
So it looks like, Liam will be in the sc room again but with a great deal of inclusion options throughout the day, in a different environment and with a new teacher. This is good as he gets the challenge but still has a soft place to fall when necessary, ie:sc class.
Oh and he's getting ESY....WOO HOOO. He needs it just for help with word problems and decoding certain questions. It means he'll not be in camp in June (sorry Susan, I'm going to e-mail Clay), but somehow the consistency of ESY will help. It's 4 hours a day, but I can then get Cian into a half day preschool camp those weeks too.
Now I need to call the insurance co and beg that they allow the one OT office in the county that hasn't shut up shop give the boys therapy. Ah well, that's tomorrow's battle!!
Dee (feeling slightly optimistic)

Hooray, Dee!
Thanks Ginny,
I'm hoping the fact that the nearest OT provider the ins co will allow is an hour's drive will force them to allow the local OT office to provide services.
