Melatonin -- love it! Thanks!!!

Recently it finally popped into my head that I'd read about melatonin on this board and just began trying it with my 10yo ds (NT, but I suspect ADD). He has NEVER been a good sleeper, and it always takes him hours to fall asleep. I've used it the last three nights and am in awe of what a wonder drug this is! I've only been giving him .5mg, but he's asleep within 30 minutes of going to bed instead of 2-5 hours. I LOVE this stuff!!! He's actually pretty excited about it, too. He gets pretty bored lying in bed all night awake. And he behaves as if he's better rested, but we'll see how long that lasts.
Anyway, thank you, thank you, thank you for the recommendation!!! Today's been a good day, can you tell?!

I wish someone had told me about melatonin YEARS ago.
LOL@ Evelyn.....
I am about to try it myself as my son who used to go to sleep at 10 at night, now has switched to 11:30 at night and I can't get him up in the morning. I just can't get this kid to sleep!!!!
10 is fine for him, 11:30 is not. He gets up so cranky and is more likely to have one of his "fits".
I have to work tomorrow and Saturday, but I think I will go over to the GMC and find this thing called melantonin. I am desperate, and at wits end....
The change in time happened around Christmas break, so I have to wonder if thats what did it..... the change in schedules and I just can't get him back on...
Lainie
It has worked wonders for us too.
Hi,
For last 2 weeks, Sravan is having a major time sleeping thru the night. He has not done this even as a baby. SO I really don't know what is bothering him. He gets very quiet when the sun goes down and only whispers. WOuld not practice his violin after sunset. I am not sure and he wouldn't talk about it. Today, he is not having a great day at school so far. So he is 9yrs old and wieghs about 65lbs. WHere do you get .5mg of melatonin. THe one I have is 1mg capsule.
thank you,
Anandhi
As far as I know, melatonin is good for helping a person to get to sleep in the first place, but not necessarily to keep them asleep.
I've actually been splitting larger pills. These are not chewables, but they are so small that they are easy for ds to swallow.
Melatonin helps the body get to sleep, but it doesn't help you stay asleep. It's not a sleeping pill, so if it's stress/anxieties/fear keeping your child from sleeping, I don't know that it would help your child get drowsy and sleep through the fears. Like the previous post said, you might want to see if you can figure out what's upsetting your child first in order to see what would best benefit him.
