Melatonin Question

Hi.

My son does ok staying asleep, but struggles falling asleep. (well, both my asperger's and nt have trouble settling in). I'm interested in giving them melatonin... If I buy the 1 mg pills and split it, do you think that would be ok? my younger nt son wakes in the night sometimes once a night, a few times a week (I know, minor compared to what some of you have to deal with...). For us, staying asleep was never the issue, getting to sleep was. My older son as long as he's only on the risperdal (have tried concerta and stratetta, but they don't really have any effect), gets to sleep between 8:30 and 9:15 (we get in to bed between 8:15 and 8:30 each night).

Anyhow, I'm babbling. I'd like to try to help them get to sleep and reduce their restlessness and wondered if anyone uses it themselves (which I'm also considering!), or for their nt and non-nt kids. Thanks!

Nicole

my kids are pretty tall as well. Weston is 10 1/2 yrs old and is 5'2" or so but only weighs 75 lbs. We occasionally use the 1mg melatonin but he has a hard time swallowing it and I haven't tried the liquid. Martha is 7 1/2, 4'4" and weighs 53lbs. Owen is 5 and weighs 45lbs and is 48 1/2". Warren is 15 and 6'4" and weighs 138lbs. Amelia is 13, 5'10" and weighs 110lbs. DH and I are both tall and used to be thin (and are trying to get back there) so we figure they're just normal for them.

My aspies are big, but my NT are small to average. With my kids, a lot of it has to do with their metabolism. My aspies don't enjoy being active and wear out easily, where my NT (probable ADD) ds can't sit still to save his life.

12yo AS dd is approx 5' and 120+ lbs
8yo AS ds is approx 4'7" and 95+ lbs
10yo NT ds is approx 4'10" and 65-70 lbs
3yo NT dd is approx 40 lbs and average height with the rest of her preschool class

I think your kids will have mine beat, they're really tall! DH is 6'4" (and his brother is 6'5") I'm 5'10" and the shortest of my sibs (my sister is 5'11" my brothers are 6'1", 6'2" and 6'3". I think Amelia is almost done growing and will top out at less than 6'. Warren wants to be 6'6"-- and looks like he'll make it. I'm starting to feel a bit short in my own home tho....

Yeah..my doc estimates hannah at 6'1-6'2 and DS to be in the neighborhood of 6'10.... so I have already prepared myself to be the shortest person in the house. My dad was 6'6 and my grandfather was 6'5. My little..er..um..younge brother is 6'9...... so we are a tall family...except my grandmother was 5 ft so we DO have some shorty genes in their that could kick in and slow the kids down....lol when we were house hunting, my realtor kept saying are you sure when i'd veto house as soon as we walked in..finally I had to tell her, if the ceiling feels close to me, my husband will feel like Gulliver in Lilliput! Suffice it to say we have nice high ceilings in our home....
