Today is Camp Madison at Cait's new school. It is a half day orientation program for incoming 6th graders. She is excited. I am nervous. Wish us luck.
Better go have my coffee and get her moving!

Good luck Renee! I know Cait will do just fine! Let us know how it goes!

Dear Renee,
How exciting, and here's a wish for a great day for Cait and you. I will be eager to hear how everything goes, middle school, wow!
We have 3 more years until Malcolm is ready for middle school, and while inclusion in elementary school NYC is unsupported and overloaded and untenable, it is nothing compared with lack of appropriate programming in middle school --- also, private middle and high schools for ASD kids are virtually nonexistant, so we very well may be homeschooling...
Anyways, good luck and here's crossing fingers for a fabulous day and year!!!
yours,
Sara

it will be ok, she will do ok! sending them off to middle school is so hard! We have had very good and very NEGATIVE teachers in the 2 yrs Warren has been in middle school. He has grown up alot and is still about 2 yrs behind his peers in maturity. If you stay involved (and I know you will) and the teachers do their part Cait will have a wonderful year. You may even be able to influence those new teachers and help them learn how to work better w/ kids like Cait!
Amelia had her orientation last Friday (6th grade as well), her's was good and she's scary pushing for total independence, middle school is just scarey no matter which child I send and it'll be esp so in 2 yrs when I send Weston.

Well, actually it went totally yucky.
I arrived 10 minutes before the end when they were doing this little awards thing for all these games they played and I could tell she didn't look happy. As soon as it ended she made a beeline for me and started to cry.
She still hasn't told me all, but it seems it was overwhelming and frustrating for her. The first class they sat and went over school rules and such. The teacher asked Cait to read and I guess she flat out refused. She would only tell me "but I didn't want to talk". Then during the games cait is not athletic and I guess she felt some girls were blaming her for a loss they had. Then the awards included an ice cream treat and Cait's team didn't win so she felt everyone but them got a treat. Total tunnel vision on that one. She does not do losing well even though she doesn't get the whole concept of working hard to win or sometimes you win and sometimes you don't. It was hot, they were outside for 1 1/2 hours. It was nosey, crowded, busy, etc. Typical tough stuff for Aspies.
I am not sure what else there was. After we got her in a good mood she was able to tell me some good stuff for the day but she still hasn't been able to relate most of it. She is chillin infront of Animal Planet for a while.
