middle school transition meeting

Renee, or anyone else, have any suggestion for me on what to expect, who should be there, what to say/ask? We've never done a transition meeting before if you can beleive that! The district seems to really down play them.

I have found that transitions meetings unfortunately go extremely quickly. It is just a handing off of the case from one casemanager to the next in some cases and sometimes they plan a bunch back to back with maybe a 1/2 hour time slot. Particularly if it isn't time for the childs annual IEP.
We were lucky in that Cait's annual is in the spring so we had her transition meeting with her annual one and the case manager from the new school came to her annual at my request.
What I like to do is work out well in advance what is going to happen the next year so that by the time we sit down to the IEP meeting it is basically agreeing and signing what has already been prepared and agreed to. What you will want to do is start working with the case manager now about what you would like to see in Kyle's IEP for next year and what you would like his placement to be like. Find out where they plan on offering for his FAPE and ask if you can go visit the program. It may even be RSP at your neighborhood middle school. Try to work out as much as you can in advance.
As always, remember, if you are not comfortable with the results of the IEP then don't sign or ask to reconvene if there is not enough time.
